Is Kaplan Overrated?

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hello guys! I don't want to bring controversy on this forum nor I want to promote one product over another.

Based on my personal experience, I tentatively may lean towards saying that Kaplan is overrated. Yes you heard me. Kaplan is not all that!

Let me explain myself. Every posting I read on this forum here is full of praises on a specific product that helped people passing the boards. The most mentioned products are Kaplan, Saunders, NCSBN and other study guides. Some people passed NCLEX the first time, others had to do it more than one time.

I studied for NCLEX using mostly Saunders and the NCSBN online review course, and I also used other books and the RN NCLEX 3500 software. I had the option to enroll in a Kaplan course, but I decided to consider other options. Not only it was cost effective, but I knew that NCLEX, as intimidating that it can be, it is just a test. I was confident that the key was to develop a winning strategy, have a plan, and execute it.

In my NCLEX preparation, I mostly focused on improving my critical thinking skills. I don't care which material you are going to use for NCLEX preparation, but if you can not think critically, you are doomed to fail.

Is Kaplan overrated? The answer will vary depending of who you are asking. But, before you spend hundred of dollars, make sure that you weigh all the options that are available to you. NCLEX is about critical thinking. There are so many books on the market that may help you slaying the beast. I do believe that Saunders is one the best out there. Lippincott also has some very good books.

Do as many questions, as you can. Know your weak areas. Review the rationales of missed questions. Make sure also that you breathe! The most important of all strategies is to be confident! If you ask me, as much as I respect Kaplan products, I can surely say that Kaplan is just a study guide like others. I didn't use Kaplan course, and I passed with 75 questions on my first try!

Don't label me as anti-kaplanite. I am just giving an opinion. We all agree that NCLEX test can be very challenging. But in my opinion, a good use of critical thinking skills will be very valuable and helpful to prepare for NCLEX.

So long!

Good luck to all of you who are testing soon and happy studying!

I definitely feel like it depends on how you were prepared in nursing school & how your study habits are. I started ATI but hated it...for me it was a lot of work & I didnt have the time....studying 7hrs a day for 6 days a week! Kaplan wasn't bad. I enjoyed the questions and the NCLEX had similar type questions but I noticed the questions on NCLEX weren't as complicated as Kaplan questions were....Also kaplan offers videos on there that were helpful, to the point!

Yes, I've gotten alot out of the videos on Kaplan's website. They really helped with conent review. The lady that does them is very dry, but is is to the point.

hey Jack!!!

how are you??? its not raining here but very hot and humid. i started my job and its just like sitting in a nursing class so far....so what they say? passing the nclex is the beginning of a new learning process. we had to read articles, learn about pharmacy policy, communication with physicans, do self learning packets, simulate a code, etc and join a council on my unit. next week is more training before we actually go to the floor, blah, you started working yet, icu right? have you been on the first year nurse forum yet? thats a cool forum also.

hey..don't be dismay. just this time around as everyone says, change the way you review. im taking nclex-rn this year third time. i got the same result as ever (in my both test). it really confuse me 'til now so i wanted to take a program that will best suit me. it depends on what you really need to enhance you. in some point i realize that i need a program that will help me learn strategies and critical thinking abilities, so i chose one that i believe will help me be successful on that. we have different review programs for different sets of people. one person reach that goal because he/she believe in himself in everyway possible. i read a lot of cons and pros in different review programs. but if i'll let myself be swooned by that, i could never reach the one that i've been striving for. this thread is just trying to explain that review programs (the name) is not the one that'll help you passed the test. but the commitment and you being motivated. God bless in you choosing which one is best for you! :)

Kaplan is not overrated, it is overpriced.

As has been stated, in selling their product they send the message that your NS exams were insufficient preparation and that you need THEM to guarantee NCLEX success. This is what most programs, review books will say to prospective buyers. They all attempt create, then capitalize on the student's anxiety. This is how they all make their money. Kaplan just demands more of it.

I have used Kaplan, Saunders and ATI....and I have yet to pass the NCLEX-RN. Of the 3 study aides, I liked Kaplan and Saunders. Like some people have said, there are ups and downs to any NCLEX review. Also, even though I haven't passed yet, Kaplan did help me alot. I just wish it wasn't so expensive. I mean, for the QBank alone, it's $299! So, not sure on overrated, but overpriced...definitely!
