IS IT OKAY?!?!?

Is it ok that when I read some of the posts that are talking about preceptorship or nursing classes or clinicals, I feel like I'm reading a foreign language!? I'm thinking "um...whaaaaat?!?!" I know that's all stuff I'll learn when nursing classes actually start. It's just kind of overwhelming to feel so lost and confused I guess! Its feeling unprepared! It's quite frightening actually! Is this a normal feeling to have right before you start the program!?

It seems easy but it's not all I know it said A patient is 67 years old with a case of ..... then i went blank.... can someone help me out.. I'm not even in nursing school but i know some of it.. i don't know.... can someone tell me i'm right

Oh honey wait until your first day of nursing school lol. There was not one person in my class the first day who didn't leave looking like *** did I get myself into and freaking out over the overwhelming stress that our prof's said was to come. It is stressful but you fall into it as you go and it becomes less overwhelming. You will learn as you go.

You pick it up pretty fast. Right now you have no frame of reference so most of the stuff that gets posted here goes in one ear and out the other.

you will be learning a new language and new culture, so just take it one at a time

classes -traditional learning

clinicals - live training at a hospital, clinic or any place providing direct patient contact. An instructor will be with you and you will be in a group with other students (general definition)

Preceptorship - a licensed nurse will direct your learning. This could be while you are still a student and you will not have the instructor around. Generally, we precept new hires to our hospital as well. New grads and seasoned nurses alike have to learn our way of doing things.

Hope this helps.

forgot two

externs - have not graduated their program yet but are working more on their own, but supervised closely

interns - have graduated their program and are working independently, but supervised

Speaking of abbreviations, when I was in nursing school, it was still common in the ER to have a board with patient names and diagnoses on the wall. One day I saw this:

Patient Doctor Dx Room # Nurse

Jones Smith CP 4 Shannon

Smith Payne GIB 16 Lisa

Brown Carter HTN 7 Shannon

Jacobs Johnson FDGB 8 Dave

I was cruising right along: "okay, chest pain, GI bleed, Hypertension....FDGB. Hmm, what's that? FDGB....Can't think....wait...no...oh crap, I'll have to ask about it and will probably look like a total idiot."

"Ummm, excuse me, Dave, ah, what is FDGB?" He said "Head injury. You know-fall down go boom."

I knew then I was going to love my ER rotation! :D

You might not have the intern definition right. We have internship in our last semester.
