Is dropping A&P and taking it online a good or bad idea

Published

I am currently a student at TCC and I am not doing very well in A&P. I want to transfer to TCU extremely bad, but I don't know how in class courses differ from online in terms of what a school looks at. Do the schools know you've taken a class online? I need to do much better in A&P and I know it's too late for me to do that now. I need help. I don't know what to do. Should I drop and retake it online or in the class room again?

Hey Whitney, whose your teacher? I'm taking A&P also at TCC. Did you take your first exam in lecture and lab? Have you talked to the teacher about your grade and what you can do to improve? I know that they do offer AP online @ TCC with Vu and Foote but I heard it was harder with Vu. If you think that your going to Fail I would suggest dropping it but if you think that you can make it out with a B I think you will be ok maybe even a C depending on how the rest of your grades are. I normally attend UTA but decided to take AP at TCC bc I heard Dr. Henry was hard at UTA and he is the only professor that teaches AP at UTA and he teaches part I & II. I would suggest taking it with a teacher that has great reviews. I know that it is really hard to get a good teacher at TCC bc the classes fill up within the first couple of hours however I was lucky and kept stalking webadvisor to get into Dr. Adams AP II class and Lorraine Smiths AP I class :). Also the schools have no idea that you have taken the class online it shows up on your transcript as a regular class (it will never say online) in otherwards you have earned the credit online just as taking it in class

For lecture I have Gargan, who I love and for lab I have Foote. Sadly, I have failed both the lecture tests and I have not had a test in lab yet. High school was a complete blow off for me, so now I have no clue how to study or anything. I will be talking to Gargan next Tuesday to get her opinion on what to do. I'm pretty sure I'll be dropping soon, but I still don't know about retaking it online or with Gargan again.

If you are not doing well in the class, it would be wise to drop it to avoid a poor grade. However, I don't know that an online class would suit your needs. More chances to obtain help from the instructor in a traditional classroom environment. Also, you can get involved in study groups which can be a big help.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe taking it over the summer in a class room would be the best bet for me.

Almost every comment I have read concerning online courses indicates that there is more work involved and the students found the online format to be more difficult. That is why I think it is better for someone who is having trouble mastering the subject material to take it in a classroom format.

I don't think online would be a good answer. I would drop it if you really don't think you can pull thru with a decent grade. I would read other A&P books as well....I read the A&P for Dummies first....it is really helping me....and listen to online A&P lectures in the car, etc......I find I need almost ALL methods of studying...so reading...then write (do all the questions you can get your hands on).....and listening.....completely submerse yourself in A&P.

I listen to the Vango notes.....there are free lectures in iTunes as well...

you should take it in the classroom, I recommend Lorraine Smith at TCC SE campus. OMG she is one of the best teachers ever. She gives a review for her test, shes actually doing a review today for our 1st exam on Tues. She brings the test and will go over it in class and will tell you what to actually look over and study! Also she gives 10 bonus points on each test and the students get to pick what the bonus will be over, she does that so none of the students will have test anxiety! I love her so much, she gives 4 test and 10 quizzes that add up to be a test grade! she will also drop the the 3 lowest quizzes also so you have 13 all together, they are very easy it just memorizing prefixes occasionally she'll change it up! Also she has her own website with her notes. :)

Do you know if she teaches it over the summer? Test reviews always help me a lot and we don't get them in my class.

She told our class she might not be teaching over the summer bc it goes by so quick and it takes a lot of her time. Yeah reviews always help me too! Her review was great today she went though each question on the test and told us what to be familiar with! I'll let you know if she ends up changing her mind about the summer class:wink2:

I can agree with this. I have to take most of my prereqs online because of my job but this is not the easier route. I took A&P I and II online which was great with my work schedule but I will say from talking to people who took the on campus version (same school) I get the impression that I took the harder path. I'm taking hybrid chemistry now - online lecture - campus labs - and I'm at the point where I think classroom instruction would make my life easier. But I have access to a tutoring service through my school and that is a big help. If you're struggling with the material then online probably is not your best solution - you need instruction from a good teacher if you can get one. Also if your school has a tutoring service try it.

She sounds absolutely wonderful!

Any suggestions for a Micro teacher?
