Is clinic nursing a dirty job?

Published

Hello. I was curious as to whether clinic nursing is a dirty job. I have no issues with blood, but I'm wondering if any of you clinic nurses have to deal with other unpleasant things. I still believe nurses are amazing given all the responsibilities they have. Thank you for all you advice!

Worst I saw was a woman complains of lady partslly bleeding & severe pain, hysterectomy history. GP sends to GYN for evaluation. He thought maybe some cancer?

She had put Jacks & rocks up there....yep....Jacks from the child's game. GYN said he'd never dug so much out of someone before. It filled 2 kidney trays! We couldn't use that OR for the rest of the weekend. Same weekend that someone "lost" their clanking balls off the perpetual motion device used in schools. Those were found in the rectal cavity of someone else.

I don't know WHY someone would do that short of Munchauseun syndrome (the rocks & Jacks one). I can figure out the other one. Both were surprised by our findings.

Did he at least bounce the ball and see how many he could grab before it fell?

No, he was NOT amused. I didn't even suggest it since he has such a dry sense of humor. He usually ends up grumbling at all of us for even laughing. Good doctor, but he probably would have been throwing instruments 25 years ago.

LOL! Thanks for sharing! I find it unusual that a male would become a GYN though.

Worked in OB/GYN clinic.

The complete prolapse of a uterus sure is yummy, laying there in front of the patient.

But the worst is a woman who used a potato as a pessary. OH yea it took root. NASTAY.

I've seen that too!!! The Tateressary.

Why is that unusual?

Definitely seize the opportunity to volunteer. If your a good volunteer and help out the nurse sometimes we'll explain things and you get to see what we do.

i think not every department allows you to volunteer. I feel like it's mainly ER and L & D, but every place is different.

Just wiping down beds may give you an idea of what your getting yourself into :)

I did hear from people that volunteered at hospitals that they're usually on their cell phones, so they don't get too much exposure in how it's like to work there. However, I know it's better than nothing. I did watch several nursing skills videos on YouTube. EmpoweRN and RegisteredNurseRN are awesome YouTube vloggers!

Agree with all the above and remember most people coming into a primary care clinic have something COMMUNICABLE! And I have to say the worst smell in the world is a patient coming into the clinic straight from a hog operation without changing clothes (or showering).

What is a hog operation?

Operating on a hog?

Well, I can't argue that that wouldn't indeed be the worst smell in the world.

But where in the name of God are you working that patients walk into a clinic covered in hog guts? Even in the deepest, darkest pits of 'Murica, I'd have to imagine that's a faux pas.

Could be talking about a worker on a hog operation (really BIG farm)....

Some "farm hands" get into nasty situations & have to go to clinic or ER. But, not all of them can or are willing to stop for a shower or change first.

I'm 2nd'ing the EWW! on this....
