I am graduating in December and I am very confused on where to go to work and what specialty to choose, however, my friend that just graduated seems to be having a hard time getting a job. Has anyone experience the same thing?

I do not think that it happens to everyone, but once in a while you hear stories of new RN's who can't find a job.

I did have a friend that could not get a job when she got her license from her BSN program. But then again, she was pregnant when she was looking for a job---

she ended up getting a per-diem job she found online when she was 6 months pregnant, later she gave birth came back to per-diem, then they hired her full time.

In my opinion, sometimes people do not interview well, and that has something to do with them not getting a job.

But most hospitals either have new RN programs, where they teach them then send them to the floors, or do onthe job training for new grads.

Eventually, everyone has to get a job.

Thank you for your response. I agree with you, I think interniews is where they are loosing points.

Thanks!!

Definitely, and they won't hire a RN w/o experience.

I have an excellent background in Dialysis and I currently run a medium size dialysis facility as a DON.

I'm tired of what I'm doing and I want to something else.

I have applied to jobs in my area (Holy-Cross, IPMC, NBMC, CSMC, Boca CH, Cleveland C, NWMC): Pre-op, post-op, icu, ccu, OR, case management, cathlab, etc.... and they all have turned me down because I do not have any experience in these particular areas. I started working in dialysis after school and have been doing that ever since. I've never worked in the hospital. But they only want to hire me in tele/med-surg or ER, and I do not want to work in these areas. I'm frustrated and I'm still stuck at my job :(

:banghead:

I agreed. I used to work at Holy Cross and all the new nurses ended up on the Med-Surge floor.

Wouldn't that be a way for you to re-start though?? At least you would get the experience that everybody seems to want.

Good luck to you!!

Well, I guess it depends where you apply to work. At my hospital they take brand new RN's and GN's to the PICU, NICU, CCICU, ER, OR....... specially if they worked there during school as a nurse tech.

but if you have to have medsurg before starting in the specialty you want, then I would do that!!!!!!!

TO ME it's important to get medsurg experience before starting in the PICU or even ER........ you are responsible for the lives of these patients and without ever experiencing what it's like to be a nurse, it's not fair for the patients.

Don't get me wrong. A lot of people I see come to the PICU as brand new and they do great and some don't and leave quick.

Everyone requires and wants experience before starting out --- so it's a great idea to start SOMEWHERE

I used to think that I would go straight to ER and not need the med surgical or telemetry experience, but as I am getting closer to graduation I see how much I don't know and it would be REALLY unffair to me and the patients if I did that.

So yes, I agree with you. Some people can do it but I don't think I can.

Great input!! Thanks!!

I am also having a problem here in the Orlando area. I have been an LPN since 1997. I just took the nclex and I had taken 4 years off to be with my kids after my husband died. I worked Med-surg and Er at a hospital in Atlanta and I did everything the Rn's did except hang blood.

When I am going for jobs now all they want to do is stick you on med-surg. I have worked in a hospital setting before and I don't like med-surg. I want to go to the OR. I guess they don't train you any more. I know every Nurse that works a specialty didn't go through a training course, because I didn't have too when I worked ER they just trained me. I also took a refresher course just so they wouldn't say I have been off the floor to long.

Any suggestions would be great

Hi futurecalinurse! I can relate. I'm having a hard time getting a job. I have applied to Broward hospitals and hospitals in Ft. Myers/Naples. I have not one interview yet! This is very frustrating. I don't know if there is a hiring freeze or the economy is bad. Most I applied for wanted experience and i just got my RN license a month ago. Im going to the Career fair in ft. Lauderdale in Nov. So hopefully i will get something. You should go. That way you are ahead of the game when its comes to finding a job. Good luck. Any advice from anyone?

Hello pocmarz87,

I am going to the career fair on November 6, not only it will help me, but also because it's mandatory for the class that I am taking now. I hope to make really good connections there. See you there!!

hey PDHDRN what does IPMC, CSMC, and NWMC stand for?

it took me a few months to find a job here in broward county. i was previously employed up north at florida hospital (wauchula) and decided to move down south to be with my boyfriend. i applied everywhere for approximately four months. i had only two interviews and got the job that i interviewed at second. i am not necessarily without any experience, i worked the floor on a med-swing/ortho rehab unit for about eight months. however, the hospital that employed me considers me a new grad so i am getting new grad pay and going through all the new grad specialty courses before i work the floor. good luck! :)
