Is anyone else's school increasing tuition?

Grrrrr..... I'm so ticked! My university is going to increase tuition 15% this fall. They just had a 10% increase 2 years ago when I started the pre-req stuff. On top of that, the parking decal fee went from $50 to $170 AND WE HAVE NO WHERE TO PARK!!!

Oh, and they decided to add a $400/year mandatory meal plan to everyone. Umm, I'm a single parent and I live OFF campus in my own home. AND, senior nursing students are only on campus 8 hours per week during the first semester and just 2 during the 2nd semester. WTH? They did allow for some meal plan exemptions but I feel really terrible for the other students.

Did I mention that I attend the school where the A&P teacher shot 6 co-workers, killing three of them? You'd think they would reconsider the tuition increase in hopes of attracting more students given this situation.

ok, vent over.

samuel merritt university has gone up about 5% a year for the past two years.

Over the last 9 years, the cost of ecucation at a California State University has increased by about 170%.

They just tacked on another 5% for fall 2010. At this point, it's pretty much a given that "fees" (since we don't have tuition in CA!) will increase, right along with administrators' salaries, pensions, bonuses and perks every year.

When you factor in the furlough days, the slashed services, reduced classes and higher fees for EVERYTHING, impacted majors and on and on ad nauseum... it's obvious that higher education, at least in California, has completely lost sight of its mission.

Practically every school around the country has increased tuition and fees. At my school, we got a 7% increase. And at my school, the college of nursing and health sciences already has the highest tuition rates out of all the colleges in the university.

I am in California. I graduated last year. They raised tuition every semester when I was in nursing school and continue to do so. In fact, believe they doubled it right after I graduated. If this is the first of your tuition getting raised and only 15%; consider yourself lucky.

My tuition only increased $2 per credit hour, so it's $85 a credit hour now. We pay $50 for a parking pass though and we also have no where to park between the hours of 11am and 2pm Mon-Fri. That seems to be when most people roll out of bed for class.

The school is right around the corner from a not so great part of town and they are having people sit at this church for a shuttle (van) to pick them up and drop them off at campus. This church is right next to a motel where a bunch of drug deals have gone down and there are always prostitutes lingering. Many students are mad about this. It doesn't affect me though because my classes are early morning or late at night. But I still think the shuttle is ridiculous. Now they are offering bus passes (paid for.) I don't live near a bus stop and most people who drive don't live near bus stops or don't want to take the bus because it takes freakin forever to get to school.

I wish they would just suspend new applicants for a short period of time. But, it's all about money.

My schools tutition has doubled in the last 2 years. A few years ago the tuition was 100 dollars per credit hour and now its 400 per credit hour plus a very hefty list of "fees". I added it up and getting my ASN is going to cost me about 50,000 dollars with books.

yes I know exactly what you mean. I am a student at CSUEB and they are charging an extra $240 per class for summer. BOO!

Wow, I didn't even realize that CA schools don't charge tuition? Well, besides the "non-tuition fees" that several of you mentioned.

Although it seemed like a good idea in the short-term, maybe that wasn't such a wise move in the long run...

My school does that too. We are charged $60 per credit hour each semester. I had 16 hours last semester so that added over $1k with the other crappy lab fees they charge. Wanna know how many days we went to the lab? TWO!

I guess what I really hate about these increases and fees is that we never really see what the money is going towards. The parking fee was $50 in 2008. In the 2009-10 year, they increased the parking fee to $170 but the parking situation has not really changed. So why are we paying TRIPLE what it was just the year before?

It just burns my biscuits!!!!

My school was happy to claim in the local news paper that they were not raising tuition this fall. However, instead of charging us by the credit hour they are now charging us by the contact hour. So although the price per unit did not go up, the clinicals I have for 2 credits each are 6 contact hours each. ouch!!!
