Interview with Nurse

Published

Hello Guys,

I am a new member to the forum because I have some question regarding this subject. I am a first year Nursing student and I have a class called Communication in Nursing. This professor gave us an assignment but I can't come up with a good question for this assignment. The Assignment is basically called "Interview with Nuse, where we have to interview a real nurse and makeup like 15 question to ask the nurse and write down answers and type something but I can't come up with any question. It would be great if you all could help me out making up like 12- 15 question.

thank you.

Welcome. We cannot do your work for you. Do you have any questions that you have written yet that you could share? We then may be able to make suggestion to help you come up with other questions.

We get these requests all the time, but you're the first one I can remember that wants help deriving the questions.

What do you want to know about someone's career path, decision points, experiences, plans? Pretend you're sitting at the coffee shop having a conversation. What do you say to keep it going if you want to learn about what s/he does?

You're about to interview a nurse, but can't think of a single question for which you want an answer? That's surprising. As a first-year student you should have roughly a hundred questions waiting to be asked, given the opportunity to ask them of a live nurse.

What is it you want to know about working as a nurse? Then ask the person you are interviewing :-)

Hello Purna, I will happy to give you some questions for your interview. Some soon forget when they started out as a student. You can ask questions like " what or who influenced you to be a Nurse?". If you could change anything about your Nursing career, what would it be?. Is there a patient that you will alway remember, and how did it make an impact on you?. Who was your biggest mentor in you career? These are the type of questions that you can ask.

Aw, river, we know you mean well and it's your first post and all, but we really try hard NOT to do students' homework for them. We want to help them learn, so we try the Socratic method, which, as you might remember, is guided inquiry. We ask them questions to see what their thought are and help them develop some.

You will see a bazillion posts asking, "I need to interview a nurse, please answer all my questions," and those we redirect to real live identifiable nurses in their communities (this is usually part of the assignment-- to get out there). As I said this is the first one I've seen where they want to tell them the questions too!

You'll see a bazillion more asking you to write their care plans, to solve their med math problems, and write their application essays. Resist. Remember, the first rule of rehabilitation is never to make the patient more dependent, but to give him the tools that he will use to bring himself to maximal function. Refer them to the many threads here that will help them learn how to think like nurses, do basic algebra, and think about why they, themselves, are applying to a nursing program. We do them no favors if we just give them answers.

I know it's a pleasant feeling when somebody thanks you. I do. We all do. But think of context-- do you thank a teacher for giving you all the answers or do you thank her for teaching you how to think when there's nobody there to give the answers?

So...OP: What are your thoughts? Anything yet?

1. Why did you choose this specialty?

2. What do you do if a patient refuses care at the risk of his or her own safety?

3. What would you do if a physician questions the accuracy of your work?

4. How do you like to be recognized for your hard work?

5. What are your biggest job motivators? Is it patient care or certain responsibilities?

6. How do you try and create a great patient experience?

7. How many patients do you feel comfortable providing care to at one time?

8. What types of technology are you most experienced with?

9. How do you deal with stressful work situations?

10. What prompted you to become a nurse?

Please read the previous post by AliNajaCat. Feeding things that others should put time & effort into thinking is not helpful. This is a key concept in nursing.

No thanks. If I want to answer a question, than I will.

Thank you all for the wonderful feedbacks, i asked my professor and she said the questions i can make up using my "Assigned Book and i know i can answer my questions but kinda feel that i would have wrong question when i ask, that is the reason i ask in the forume. i have interview the nurse already and i got a great response to the question i got and i also based my 2 questions on the suggestion you guys have given. Thank you all so much.

I gave her some examples and answered a simple question. I am well aware of the Socratic method. How can they become critical thinkers if we are not there to give them a helping hand from time to time? Remember she is a first year student, not a third year. She is just starting to develop her critical skills. Enough said!
