Interview at Duke

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi all,

I am graduating this May, and I have just received word that I will have an interview at Duke University Hospital next week. I was wondering if anyone had any interview tips for me? This is my very first interview (besides a life guarding job) so I need all the help I can get!

Thanks so much to everyone who replies!

WOW.. psulli2010.. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. I decided that it will be worth the $500-600 trip. I hope that my interview goes as well as yours does. Was yours an interview blitz or a regular interview?

Congratulations psulli2010! Are you starting November 4th as well? Are you also a new grad? I'm glad I won't be alone, even if we'll be in different units!

Hi everyone, I just received a job offer yesterday! I am veryyy excited but still unsure if I am going to accept. I'm not 100% sure that I'm willing to move away alone. I was hoping for some insight to help make my decision. In terms of apartments, I have heard that Raleigh sounds like the area I'm looking for. I want something a little busier and city-ish than Durham. Preferably with lots of people and nearby restaurants, bars, shopping, etc. If I'm going to be moving somewhere alone and knowing no one, I would like it to be in an area where I am likely to meet people. Any suggestions on apartments in or around downtown Raleigh? I'm also looking for something reasonably priced...

Chapel-Hill is close and it has lots of fun things to do. too It's obviously another college town. Raleigh is great! I am older and have a family, but I wish I could be closer to Durham/chapel Hill for all the stuff to do.

mh1229, the Brier Creek area of Raleigh is also really nice- about 15-20 minutes from Duke and nice apartment complexes, restaurants, etc. Probably worth looking into.

New to AllNurses, but I also have a general question for the masses about the timeline of applying to Duke New Grad positions. How soon after the position closes should you hear about an interview, etc? Does it just depend on the unit? I've heard that after about a week from the application closing you get notified if your resume was forwarded to the hiring manager- then does it take another week or two to hear about interviews? If anyone could shed some light on their experience/timeline, that would be great! Thanks so much.

The website is a little behind. Once it said that my resume had forwarded, it was a bout a week before I got a call for an interview. Hr got backed up and I had to call them to find out if I got the job, most people got calls pretty fast.

Also- the other topic: Morrisville and Cary are other towns that are really close. Cary is probably more expensive, but I know people who live in both and love it.

Don't forget, Raleigh/Durham is less than 2 hours from the beach.

Thank you! And yep, being 2 hours from Wrightsville is pretty great :).

Congratulations on your interview FutureCruzanRN! I don't think they offer phone/skype interviews but I could be wrong. If you're committed and really want the job, I would recommend traveling for it, especially if you have an interview that includes shadowing on your unit, because it's very exciting to experience where you might be working. By the way, I was invited for a shadow interview in the PICU a couple of weeks ago. The nurse I shadowed was really nice, and then most of my interview was my interviewer telling me a lot about the hospital. She actually didn't ask me too many questions, but it's always good to be prepared with answers to potential behavioral questions centered around Duke's 5 core values. My interviewer seemed mostly worried that I wouldn't be happy / wouldn't commit to setting down roots at Duke (I'm from California, and it's a 2 year commitment -- and of course they would always like you to stick around). I assured her that I wouldn't have flown out to the interview if I wasn't serious about working at Duke. I received a call next day from the nurse recruiter offering me the job. I happily accepted! :) Good luck!![/quote']

Hello I am flying out Wednesday for my interview Thursday for their Preop/PACU and I shadow after. Did you guys wear scrubs? Or did you change? Also what type of questions should I expect? I too am coming from California to interview.

I wore scrubs. the interview itself was kind of informal. NM laid out expectations (mine was NO drama allowed) and some other things and she asked me if I thought I would fit in. Answered the questions that I had after my shadow (that really allows you to figure out what you want to know). It was great.

See I am debating I will be bringing both. Was talking to a classmate and wore scrubs since she shadowed first. Idk. I will figure it out in the am. What are you going for?

I was told to wear scrubs because my shadow experience came immediately after the interview.
