Interview with a Doctor??

Published

I have an interview at a family health clinic on Tuesday I passed the interview with the HR rep and he said I will be interviewing with the doctor of the clinic, but I will also be shadowing him as well. Has anybody else had to interview with a doctor? What kind of questions do they ask? Would he want me to demonstrate any skills for him? I'm just kind of in the dark here on what to expect.

Thanks!

For a LPN/RN position or an APRN?

I will guess the former.

My office (sadly) uses MAs not nurses, but I always do the last interview before hiring. My real goal is just to make sure I will get along ok with the person I interact with throughout the day. I also try and get an impression if I think our patients will like him/her.

I will occasionally have them do a few BPs for me. That's it.

Good luck!

When I had an interview with a doctor for an office position it seemed like he wanted me to ask the questions. It was odd because he kept asking, "what questions do you have for me?" I asked about types of patients he sees, typical diagnoses, daily routine, and what interested him in that particular area. Then, the other nurse came in and told me more specific things from a nursing perspective. I got the impression this interview was more of seeing how compatible we would be.

Sorry I forgot to specify this is for an RN position

yeah, if you work closely with these people, they'll want to feel you out to see if it's a good fit personality wise.

I interviewed briefly with the doc I work for when I went to my interview. He asked about my work history, long term goals, and what clinical areas from nursing school I enjoyed most. Because I work in dermatology, he said to be "no new nurse dreams about going into derm" and he didn't want to bring me on board if the ICU was going to be calling for me after I get my foot in the door. So I told him what I was interested in but I also mentioned that to me, it was more about a healthy work environment and if he was willing to invest time in me, that I would invest time into his practice. I did shadow with him and another RN immediately after and he next day. I started 2 weeks later :)

Good luck :)

I'd say the answer to that question is dependent on the doctor's personality. In my experience working in Family Practice clinics and other specialty clinics, usually they want to get a feel for your personality to determine if you will fit well with the team. Be observant and take your cues from the doc and reflect it back.

Being asked to shadow the doc on a first-time interview is somewhat different, so maybe he/she will ask you to do some assessments, but demonstrating an ability to establish rapport with the patients is important, too since FP has such a wide variety of ages and conditions.

Best wishes - I really enjoyed my time in family health.
