question abt working experience...

Hi. I am a new RN (graduated March 2005) and am currently training at a hospital here in the Philippines. I passed the IELTS and have applied for the CGFNS and NCLEX which I will probably take early next year (could be in March). Should I be hired this month, I would be working until December. Then, in January I'd request for a 2 month leave (the hospital allows this) to review for both exams. I'd probably resume work after taking the exams. My question is this: how many more months would I need to work (assuming I passed the exams- how I pray for this!) before leaving for the States to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are NO LAWS that state that a foreign nurse that should be working in the U.S. should have an experience. The law only states that the foreign nurse should meet the following criteria: passed either CGFNS/NCLEX, English Exam requirement, Visa Screen.

The one that looks for experience are employers but there are employers who are hiring fresh grads with no experiece but possess a state rn board license. Some hospitals would like to train their foreign nurses in their own facility because most of the hospitals in the Philippines are often outdated...

Agree!

If you have the funds for the NCLEX exam, and are able to do that, there is absolutely no reason to sit for the CGFNS exam one month later. It will not benefit you in any way.

And as the others have stated, you are going to get your training at the new facility no matter what. Things are done quite differently in the US than they are done in your home country. Your assessment skills will change entirely also. You will be responsible for listening to breath sounds and heart tones, just to name a few.

You actually do not even need to be licensed in your home country in most cases. The rulings state graduate from an accepted school of nursing with a completed set of transcripts and the English exams, as well as the NCLEX exam to practice in the US.

CGFNS exam is not a licensing exam, even if you take that, you are still required to take the NCLEX exam for licensure. NCLEX will give you your results in 48 hours, depending on the state, CGFNS will take you almost six weeks.

The reason why March seems the likely month for me to take the NCLEX (and CGFNS) is because of yah the fingerprinting process which can take as long as 4 months. Maybe we can move the NCLEX test to February? Since there is nothing that I can do to speed things up (is there?), do you suggest I work or review for the NCLEX first? Because I am training now, I kinda have a feel of the work and it is very tiring to work and study simultaneously. My working conditions are very stressful and sometimes I work 4 hours overtime! By the time I get home I quickly eat then sleep and before you know it its time to go to duty again. :bluecry1:

 HELLO

I know its really dificult to review and work but we have to sacrifice yah anyway i would recommend that you enroll to a review class and request your off duty on weekends coz there are review center which offer that schedule. Anyway if ur applying in CA it will take around say 8 months probably youll get the approval call them double check they are nice . Okey GOODLUCK and youll pass it and you really have to choose work or review for the meantime. ALOHA :wink2:

California is only four to six months on average, no longer than that. Provided that they have everything.

i say, listen to suzanne.

take the relevant exams first, as quick as you can.

no one can predict how long the window of opportunity for nurses

will be kept open. if you can still manage to work and review at the same

time, do it. but if it's taking too much from you, i guess you'd have to

give up your work at the moment.

otherwise, i laud you for loving your work whilst reviewing for the exams.

personally, i admire people who take pride and joy in practicing their career

in their own country, whether methods are outdated or not.

remember, genuine care and devotion for service for other people will never be outdated.

for me, these are the most essential skills that you need to bring anywhere. the other technical skills, you'd learn as you master and practice your profession.

then, you'd truly be worthy of a hard-earned green card.

good luck, purplecotton.

i will pray for you.

Thanks Suzanne4, Cheyeree, and nurse dependent. Nursing is not what most people here think it to be and it is a great character-building experience! My mom is a doctor and she now appreciates (truly) nurses and what they have to do to keep the institution up and running. My mom is a nice doctor, by the way (hehe).

hael

hello hael! it wnt be amazing until i pass both exams. hahaha. i applied for the NCLEX CA. i dont think i can stand the cold in the east coast. i dnt have the results to both exams yet. apparently CA does not participate in the quick results program (some states post the results after 2 days w a fee of around 7.95$) so i have to wait.

yes i applied for both exams at the same time, im tired of reviewing.

by stupid BON i meant the philippine BON and all their crazy questions for the local boards. they dont make sense anymore.

did you take the CGFNS, NCLEX?
