question abt working experience...

Hi. I am a new RN (graduated March 2005) and am currently training at a hospital here in the Philippines. I passed the IELTS and have applied for the CGFNS and NCLEX which I will probably take early next year (could be in March). Should I be hired this month, I would be working until December. Then, in January I'd request for a 2 month leave (the hospital allows this) to review for both exams. I'd probably resume work after taking the exams. My question is this: how many more months would I need to work (assuming I passed the exams- how I pray for this!) before leaving for the States to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is no actual requirement for time, some agencies want you have to have some experience, but it is not required for licensure.

If I was in your shoes, I would try to get the NCLEX done as soon as possible, and definitely not wait until March for the CGFNS exam. There is a retrogresion that is looming again, and I am almost sure that it will be in place by March. Remember that if you take the exam in March, your computer pass or not pass will not be available for about six weeks, and then you still have to wait for the letter later on.

Once this retrogression starts, you are going to be looking at about three years or even longer, if no changes are made to immigration, or special visas available again.

I would seriously reconsider your time frame, or you will have more than enough experience..................

retrogression by march? gulp! where do you base this conclusion? from previous visa trends?

i thought it only takes a day or two for NY NCLEX to release the result? its now 6 weeks?

When did you take the exam? Sometimes it takes longer for you to see your name on their site, but you can go to www.pearsonvue.com, pay the $7.95 and see your result. This is one of the reasons that I love NY, you can get your results in two days from Pearson-Vue.

If you can afford to take the NCLEX exam on your own, then do not even consider sitting for CGFNS unless you are planning to work in MIchigan.

When did you take the exam?

i havent taken the NCLEX yet although i want to take it asap :)

Just make plans to write it as soon as you can.

None of us have crystal balls, but immigration can change things at any time, and i do not think that the original 50,000 extra visas will be available if you have not taken any of the exams by March. For someone to wait until March for CGFNS, and then have to wait another 6 weeks or so for results just doesn't make any sense to me. Especially if they know of what can be coming up.

The reason why March seems the likely month for me to take the NCLEX (and CGFNS) is because of the fingerprinting process which can take as long as 4 months. Maybe we can move the NCLEX test to February? Since there is nothing that I can do to speed things up (is there?), do you suggest I work or review for the NCLEX first? Because I am training now, I kinda have a feel of the work and it is very tiring to work and study simultaneously. My working conditions are very stressful and sometimes I work 4 hours overtime! By the time I get home I quickly eat then sleep and before you know it its time to go to duty again. :bluecry1:

i just sent my CVS and NY form 1 a few days ago via fedex.....hopefully i could sit for the NCLEX at most by january...thanks for the advices suzanne....we are forever indebted to your kindness =)

There are NO LAWS that state that a foreign nurse that should be working in the U.S. should have an experience. The law only states that the foreign nurse should meet the following criteria: passed either CGFNS/NCLEX, English Exam requirement, Visa Screen.

The one that looks for experience are employers but there are employers who are hiring fresh grads with no experiece but possess a state rn board license. Some hospitals would like to train their foreign nurses in their own facility because most of the hospitals in the Philippines are often outdated...
