New Jersey or New Mexico?

i hope you can help me with this. :sniff: i'm planning to apply to new mexico for licensure, but new jersey is where i really want to work.

i thought initially that it would be alright for me to apply for new mexico then have it endorsed to nj later, like what i read in other threads, in case i passed the nclex. or since nj is a signatory to the nurse licensure compact, but has yet to implement it, i thought maybe nm license holders can also practice in new jersey by the time the state implements this.

but i just read in another thread (from the new mexico licensure exam) this message from suzanne. :uhoh21:

if you are not in the us currently, then you do not have a legal residence in the us, therefore you do not qualify for the compact state license and that is what is being asked. you will get a license that is good for nm only.

this really concerns me because i don't live in the us, so even if i pass i wont qualify for compact state license. i also read in another thread that even if you can endorse to another state, it takes a while too, maybe even longer than waiting for application to be processed even in states where processing is slow.

i don't know how things work in the us, things seem very complicated there. i just wanted to take the nclex so i can apply for a job already and work here in my country, but it seems quickest is not necessarily the best option?

do you think its better that i apply for new jersey instead?

also, does anyone know how long nj process applications? anyone there who applied for nj bon?

i'm really sorry if people have asked this question a million times already. i tried to look for info about nj applications and etc but there are too many threads already, its so confusing and i feel like i have information overload already, not to mention my eyes are now red and my wrists are sore. :crying2:

Endorsement doesn't usually take too long once you have passed NCLEX and meet the requirement of that BON on endorsement. It is right about compact unless a resident you can't do compact. It is your decision on which BON to go through but if you aim is to live in NJ then unless you have already started the process with another BON I would just stick with NJ

If that's where you want to work then apply directly to NJ.

NJ will only need the CES report from CGFNS. Foreign nurses shouldn't even be thinking of w/c are compact states and w/c aren't and they should never base w/c state to choose just base on that. That's why Suzanne tried to correct that particular issue.

If you would like to know why some apply for NM or VT rather than just apply directly to their intended state is that some State BON or BRN takes so long to process and endorsing to them would be much easier than applying to them directly (i.e CA BRN), however, for the rest it is much easier and less hassle to just apply directly to the state you would want to work and live.

It's really not that complicated but some people make things seem more complicated when it shouldn't be, esp. that particular issue about compact states you read in that thread.

Here, this is the link for CGFNS' CES.

They stated their that it typically accomplishes a CES report in 6-8 weeks after they receive all the necessary documents. I highly suggest to always use courier (Fedex/DHL, etc..) or any trackable mail system so that you'll know if it has been received by CGFNS.

If you have any more queries don't hesitate to post it here and we'll try to help as much as we can.

Hi there,

I am applying for NJ BON my sister lives there so that is where I want to work. My timelines have been.

April 2006 Applied to cgfns for CES (Required by NJ BON)

October 2006 Applied to NJ BON for liciencesure

November 1st Got letter acknowledging application from NJ BON

Nov 10th 2006 Got letter asking me to schedule fingerprinting. Have organised this for January 11th 2007 because I will be in usa by then.

Now waiting for cgfns report to go to NJ BON is 8 months and counting!!

Where abouts are you at the moment? Let me know if there is anything else you need to know.

Good luck.

In this time period, why did it take you so long for you to apply for NJ BON? Can we not apply for CES and NJ at the same time?

You see I already have my CGFNS certificate. The reason I took them in the first place is because it was a requirement before by NJ BON. But now because CGFNS is no longer needed, I now have to apply for CES(?). So then I pay double.

I already paid so much to take the CG but they keep changing the requirements for New JErsey. Aside from the the expenses for taking NCLEX in hong kong, I have to worry about the application fee for NJ because it has increased stiffly from $140-220. It's so frustrating.

That's why I thought maybe I should apply to NM instead because application is easy then just have it endorsed to NJ.

*sigh* I don't know what to do anymore. It's so frustrating. I meet one dead end after another. It's so emotionally taxing. I don't feel like taking the NCLEX anymore.

Yes you can and in my opinion it's much better to apply for the State BON application and the CES at the same time. Have a PM for you.

Hi there,

I am so sorry you are having such a hard time I know it is so hard to find the right info out there. I applied for NJ BON much later than CES because I didnt know I had to! Someone here told me that I apllied to NJ BON AFTER I got my CES report back but that wasnt right the same person told me to apply to NJ BON asap months after giving me the origional advice (Sigh)

But its fine I have now applied to NJ BON and cgfns are taking so long it hasnt been a problem.

Im afraid in your case you do need to apply to cgfns for CES NJ requires it wether you apply direct to them or endorse after applying to NM. So you may as well go ahead and apply for CES but bear in mind it takes months and months.

I hope you can work this out.

What is CES please?

CES is looking at your education and nursing transcripts and checking that you meet requirements of BON
