International nursing students in the US

Published

For those of you that are studying in the US under either an F-1 visa, or any other where you do not have permission to work, and will need to apply for a green card when you finish your schooling-----this is for you.

You must meet all of the requirements for immigration that a foreign-trained nurse does, the only exception that you have is that the English requirements are waived for you. You still need to submit the application and get a Visa Screen Certificate. This is offered by CGFNS and the application is available on their website, http://www.CGFNS.org. There is only one application available, whether you did your training in the US, or overseas.

You will still need to find an employer that will petition for your green card. You will still need to undergo a physical exam at a physician's office that is approved by USCIS an have verification of all titers and vaccinations. If you do not have verifiable proof of having had chicken pox, etc., you will need to have either a titer drawn, or receive the vaccination. Immigration is very strict now with this, they will no longer go on what you are verbally telling them.

Hope that this helps...............most of you will also be able to get an OPT for one year of training while your documents are being processed, but you can only receive the OPT once, especially if this is now a second career for you, and you already used your OPT status for the other.

If you are coming to the US just for the MSN, and already have a BSN from overseas, you will be required to write the English exams. You are only exempt from them if this is your initial training as a nurse, meaning ADN or BSN only.

hi waynetautz! welcome back.

good to hear that you've gotten your f1 minus any hitch. i just found out now that securing f1 from back home will enable you to travel for vacation to the phils. easily unlike those who shift status in the u.s. who'll be required to reapply for f1 once they return to the phils. it's crazy but who are we to question uscis procedures, eh?

i only borrowed my lab manual (fetal pig version) but you may want to try ebay to get cheap books. just make sure to check for the exact isbn, edition, version....

ok, study well and enjoy the rest of the summer!

Hi, I am international MSN student, Aug 8 Iam taking my NCLEX, I think I will pass. I took CGFNS, I don t have the results yet. How can I find sponsor in NJ, or NY? I livew in NJ. Help Please

Hi all out there,

I graduated with a BSN and now am faced with the real challenge of finding a job. I have called and applied to several places from the north to the east but am really getting nowhere. I run into a brick wall:eek: as soon as I mention to them that i will be needing sponsorship post-OPT.

Is there something wrong with the approach I am taking or is the "Demand for nurses" really not true.

I hate the fact that, I am the only Intl. student graduating from nursing school this semester and my advisors have no knowledge on what I can do(Actually I am the first from my country:D ).

I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice, ideas or suggestions on getting a job.

Thanx a bunch!

Maybe we should stay in touch - I'm in the EXACT same shoes as you are in ;)

First questions first: Have you taken NCLEX/do you have a license yet?

95% of the recruiters I talked to asked me "which State are you liscenced in". The minute I told them that "I'm planning to take NCLEX on so-and-so date" then went "Oh! Please call us after you have your license on hand".

I do make it a point of gently introducing the fact that while I graduated from a US nursing school, I AM an international worker and would thus require assistance in filing for work papers. Many of them don't seem to mind - infact, they thanked me for being upfront about it. A lot of them did mention that international nurses won't be a problem as they have some experience in hiring them.

I don't think it makes much of a difference - I think Suzanna pointed out to me that the facility by themselves don't really do much when it comes to work papers.... it's mostly you and your immigration attorney.

I'm hoping the scenario will change once I have my license.

Now if you DO have your license, this whole post is wasted :chuckle

A good place to start is to place ads/resume online. I posted mine on Monster.com and it has provided a steady source of hits :p

Start looking around your locality for hospitals and nursing homes.

Pick up any newspaper and look at the want ads.

The idea is to secure an interview - I'm asusming you are on your 1 year OPT?

cheers,

Without havign passing results on the NCLEX exam, most facilities will not even look at you. They want to make sure that you pass before they will even consider you for a position.

Which state did you apply thru for initial licensure? And even though you are getting your MSN, they may still require the CES before you can endorse.

dont worry i m one of u.. i have a job lined up and i finished wid NClex.. there are tons of emplyer willing to sponser...lem me knw if u need help in chicago area....just remember to keep wid ur paper work.. like VSC.. cuz thats the only thing thats holding bck from applying...

just keep looking arnd.. contact ppl u knw.. that will surely help..

cheers,

Hello everyone,

I am a F1 student studying in NY. I was trying to get CPT to work as nurse extern in a nearby hospital. I have finished required classes for nurse extern program. The foreign student advisor in school gave me a form and told me to get permission from the nursing department. That form states it should be a requirement to graduate. Unfortunately, the department told me they can't give permission since this is a real employment, but not required class to graduate. Does any one know how students get CPT for nursing major? Thank you so much.

I am on F1 u had CPT, my nursing dept had a nursing internship class , which i used.. and those classes are optional and all u need is a permit frm ur advisor that u need that class as a part of ur ciriculum.. so u can tell them that u wanna sign for an internship class..talk to ur director of the pgrm..i did that and it worked for me.. wish u good luck..

Hello Daretocare,

Thank you very for your information. Unfortunately, our dept. doesn't offer any internship classes. Anyway I'm going to talk to an academic advisor on this matter.

That is not correct, Suzanne. I am, being on F-1 visa, and still having 2 month left until graduation got several job offers from Hopistals that offered me sponsorship. I got those offers on the official letters directly from the hospitals from PA, NY, CA, and FL. I just had to pick where i want to go.

I am not sure, Suzanne, what is the reason for you to make the false statements?
