first I was going to put this in the current nursing student board but I wanted to get the opinions of the graduate nursing students on this question.
I have just began my first semester in nursing school. I'm terrified a nursing instructor might not like me and make it hard for me. One of my friends said she had clinicals and the teacher did not like her and made it really hard for her. is it possible they can fail you and make it really hard on you if they dont like you, expecially during clinicals?
I know I shouldnt worry about this but my friend really scared me (she wasnt trying to.... we just happen to talk one day and she bought it up)and I have had teachers in the past who just did not like me. Also how exactly do clinicals work..... and how are you graded?
Thank You

yes. She made my 3rd semester hell. She made me have a very low opinion of myself and I shed quite a few tears. There was nothing she could pick on me for clinically, so she made personal attacks. I dreaded each and every minute of clinical.
The clinicals were graded either pass or fail.
She will be an instructor with a group at the hospital I now work in. I cannot wait for her to pull the " Oh, Hi how ARE you" so that I can say "Y'know, I was only polite to you because I had to be"
just get thru. Do the best you can, lie low and dont argue, fuss or speak out of turn. Then there is nothing that you can be written up for.
sorry to hear you had a mean instuctor and its good you got through it. thats what I'm afraid of. I'm going to get through it and just deal and do me.
thx for the advice.

my very first instructor, I initially thought she was horrible, made ya feel like an idiot, screaming and embarassing the students. She was a EXCELLENT INTELLIGENT INSTRUCTOR but easily irritated by Freshman. I had her again my 4th semester, I learned how to be assertive by then and had it together and had no problems- because, of her high expectations it made me work harder, I was a mess Freshman year, my Senior year I was pretty out together with confidence and knowledge.
The worst is when I had one instructor who must have had early alzheimers, she didn't remember what you told her and she held it against the students, I received several unsatisfactory reports from her.
She quit or was fired by the 3rd semester. I initially thought she was going to be an easy to get along with instructor, but soon learned she didn't like me, because I asked questions and she didn't know the answers.

i had a teacher in my 2nd semester of LVN school that made my life a living hell.... i tried to sit down and talk to her about what i could do better. she told me flat out she didnt like my attitude and was going to fail me over it.... she pick out a few students every semester to do that to. sure enough i got a "U" in clinicals and appealled it and i won....
our 3rd and last semester the DAY BEFORE graduation she failed 2 more people because of clinicals and they appealed it and also passed..... o well.....
btw shes not a teacher shes i think a "clinical preceptor" or something... she actually works for the local hospital but is also employed by the school for just a clinical instructor

Yes, my last semester recently. She was something else and thrived in making us stressed out. Failed quite a few and waitied to tell them the last day of evaluations. Clinicals are pass or fail.
The day of pinning, she had the nerve to email us prohibiting us from interviewing with folks because we were not graduate nurses until we passed HESI. Every morning there she was in our email inbox.........a total nightmare. She was so unpredictable and just terrible.
So grateful it is over with and she is a thing of my past.

How can she get away with that? Doesn't that raise a red flag for you? Esp now that you're out (way to go Jessy) and can look back w/ more objectivity? How can she dare to tell you that you are not allowed to interview????
I don't know much about the nursing biz. I admit that. Lotsa wet behind these ears, but that school instructor has no right to tell you what you do on your time. Perhaps she was suggesting you not interview until you are sure of your weaknesses/strengths?
Gosh, what a bully! Hesi isn't even the boards. It's a test designed to forecast your potential on the boards!
I'm glad she's out of your life too Jessy. I hope your post helps others. I'm sure it will. I just had to get my in.

Wow, I thought my nightmare teacher was bad! These stories are worse than my own. I guess I had it relatively easy, but at the time I felt very stressed out.

First off I am sorry you are feeling this frustration. I think at one point and time we have all had an instructor that has made our school life hell. With that said, I am an adjunct instructor for a local community college and although I have students I could take or leave, I try to be as professional as I can when dealing with these students. If you encounter such an instructor please do yourself and the instructor a favor and ask to have a meeting with her and explain how you are feeling if you would feel more comfortable ask for another instructor or the Dean to be present.
It has been my experiance that many times the instructors are stressed over somthing they personal or professional and do not realize that they are coming accross as 'mean'. Another consideration is this. I have students all the time that start off top notch fall into the wrong crowd or get burned out. As a result they slack off, and do not preform as they can. I will be harder on those students meaning ride them more as well as speak with them regarding what I am seeing. This allows the student a chance to vent and work on the issues. Often times it is not the instructor being mean, its the instrucotr trying to facilitate somthing and unsure how do properly do so.
Best of luck to you
