Hi everyone,
Forgive me for being new to all these things that happen (still a student), but during clinicals my patient asked for Dilaudid. I let the RN know, and he rolled his eyes and said "oh, he wants Dilaudid? Everyone wants Dilaudid" quite sarcastically. I've heard that in the ER, drug-seekers frequently ask for the magical "medication that starts with a D."
What exactly is the history with Dilaudid in nursing?
Nor all patients can take Morphine. All narcotics have the potential to cause higher pressures in the biliary tree and in particular Morphine.I get horrible Sphincter of Oddi spasms that cause abdominal pain...gosh even po Morphine causes it.Its good to know this can happen.
Glucagon will reverse the spasms if you ever need to take opioids. It is a smooth muscle relaxant. It is given very often during ercp to relax the sphincter for insertion of the scope
