Inexperienced Nurses: Unwanted?

Are inexperienced nurses really unwanted in Earth?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

I guess at the moment hospitals would prefer nurses with experience because to a certain degree they need little or no orientation and can hit the floor running. A lot will depend on country but also what the visa requirements and needs are

I don't know about "on earth," but, in the current economic climate, it is clearly a "buyer's (employer's) market" -- when employers (at least in most places here in the US) have many, many applicants for every open nursing position, they can afford to pick and choose as much as they like. It just makes sense that experienced RNs would be much more appealing to employers than new grads. In much of the US, even experienced RNs are having difficulty finding employment.

I wouldn't want to use the term unwanted. In the US they would rather go with experienced RNs as stated above because it's cost effective. Once economy gets kicking in the positive direction you will see a shortage of nurses & they will be willing to train.

so what should be the term?

Specializes in Advanced Practice, surgery.

Surplus to requirement at a rough guess.

Certainly in the UK there are enough experienced and newly qualified nurses who need work. Our New grads have trained in our system and are familiar with our hospitals and the way the wards work, it's going to take far less time and resources to employ than an overseas nurse without any experience from another country.

I expect that is the same in Canada, US, Australia, NZ and other countries.

In order of preference if I was recruiting I'd go for Experience, then locally trained new grad then European RN's then other countries.

....and how many times can this question be asked? Nursing student in a country other than the Phillipines/India, strives to get graduate job...find specialty that they like to work in, might travel but always intend to come home. Settles down.

Student nurse in Philllipines/India strive to go somewhere other than own country.

Employer has suddenly got more applicants than they did before....a citizen, someone that comes from similiar heritage or someone that has license and no experience and different culture, different health system....its now tough out there. To sponsor an overseas person in Australia to a job, the employer must have strived to find an Australian citizen or permanent resident for that job first.

Though I have heard that some nursing homes that do not want nurses that know the rights of their patients and their own rights will offer sponsorship so that they can continue working at a higher profit.

Do not think this is the big answer neither, nurses that have worked in the aged care sector for a few years are 'looked down upon' by those in the acute sector and have a hard time getting a job back into acute. That's for Australian nurses with experience.

Also in Australia, employers do not employ full-time, many, many Australian nurses work .9 eft downward, this cuts down on holidays pay and study leave etc. but also is most nurses choice and most of the grad programs are not full-time neither, this must make it difficult for IEN's that want sponsorship. Though some have had to increase EFT due to increase in living expenses.

We are a country of part timers and casuals and then there is the complete slacko's but that is another story.

So in answer to your question are inexperienced nurses wanted ON earth, well within borders yes, what would we do for the future if we did not have new graduates, but and this has been said umpteen times to you, due to the economic problems those borders are now up, hospitals have budgets and if I have 20 positions available for nurses not in graduate program, I will take AU/PR nurse with experience 1-2 years, then new graduates without grad year that are Australian or permanent resident, overseas trained nurse (if the job is full-time) with experience, then overseas nurse with no experience,(if the job is full-time) its called the pecking orders.

I would experience this in your country as well, if I had been allowed to register in the first place.

forgot to ask, are inexperienced nurses wanted in your country? btw

forgot to ask, are inexperienced nurses wanted in your country? btw

in my country it's not about the experience, it's about the "backer". lol! so technically, that's a yes for your question :coollook:

backer: politics, connections

So in answer to your question are inexperienced nurses wanted ON earth

thanks for the correction. i forgot that nurses can only exist ON the Earth's crust, and not IN it, mantle, inner and outer core. prepositions still confuse me after passing the IELTS. maybe i don't deserve my grade lol!
