? about indoor pets

I am excited about a nursing career but am concerned about my pets during long shifts. :imbar I have several cats (which I am not too concerned about) and a poodlex. My poodle gets pretty antsy after I'm gone for say 5 hrs. Putting him outside is not an option. I've been thinking about a pet door or even a pet sitter . The pet door is my best bet but it still makes me nervous. Any advice ? :p

Is there anyone you know that can just go over there and let the dog out and play with it for about 30 minutes. OR, do you have any relatives that would be happy to take the dog for the day, free of charge? I have no clue. I would probably leave my pup with my mom all day.

Day boarding I suppose is also an option.

The drop in playmate/feeder sounds like the trick. I've always been a little leery of pet doors when no one is home......too many creepy crawly thingies down south that could "visit." My son has an indoor cat and he made a "condo" in an unused closet....cat box on closet shelf and a bathroom type ventilation fan on a timer. The cat loves it, the house is odor free and no pet door. They also have two dogs who have kennels in the back room who benefit from a next door neighbor playmate/feeder.

They make pet doors with an electronic "key" that you place on pets collar. Then the door will only open for your animal. But I like the playmate idea far better, you could see if a kid in the neighborhood would do this for a small fee, I would guess that some kid that can't have a dog for whatever reason would love this, and it would keep your pup from boredom destruction.

Just make sure they're responsible. And wouldn't it be nice if they had doggie daycare at your work place like they do for children sometimes?

Hee hee no kidding about the doggie daycare. however I would never get anything accomplished -- I would be checking up on him all the time ! :D

How antsy does your dog get? Look in the phone book and you might find some pet sitters who will look in on your dog and let him out. I am not a big fan of a kennel or other places with lots of dogs. Too risky for kennel cough and other diseases IMHO.

Some tricks to keep him occupied. Buy a Kong Ball and put some peanut butter or something else yummy for him to work at getting out. Hide treats around the house. First teach him the find the treat game by hiding them and helping him find them. When he gets good at it then you can hide them before you leave and tell him to find them. Keeps them busy for quite a while.

Try to not make a big deal about your comings and goings. Reinforce basic obedience so that he knows you are the boss- and he will respect that if you think it is okay for him to be left while you are gone- it must be okay. Also helps build confidence.

My vet says a healthy dog can hold their urine for 10 hours. Will someone be home before that time is up to let her out? Maybe your relatives will help out like you hope.

Not peeing for 12h or more seems unhealthy even if they can do it. Gotta let the poor guy out just to pee
