ISU LVN to BSN program California

Nursing Students Indiana (ISU)

Published

ISU has two distant learning LVN to BSN programs. One is for California LVNs and the other is for non-California LPN students. While the programs are similar there are some differences.

1. The Calif BON has placed a limit on the amount of nursing classes that Calif ISU LVN to BSN students can take during a semester. Other states have no restrictions and non-Calif students would matriculate through the program and graduate faster than Calif students;

2. California ISU students are also students of Sanoma State University and must pay an extra fee to Sanoma State; ISU issues the diploma but Sanoma State is the qualifying university that will sign the paperwork for the Calif BON;

3. Lastly, TCN has one employee--the Sanoma State liaison--who deals with the paperwork and another person who is responsible for arranging the Calif clinical facilities and getting the paperwork signed.

This thread has been started to address the issues that California ISU LPN to BSN students or potential students are facing. Have questions about the California ISU LVN to BSN program, feel free to share.

Sorry i didnt mean to upset you...

I dont pay attention to the news much and when the school I am going to told me about this, I wondered who was feeding me more BS, the school or friends?

Um is this a joke? Are you honestly just now hearing about this. I don't think it's doing to affect the number of jobs in a position upward manner. There's lots of discussion about this issue if you do a quick search on AN

I'm just surprised it been such a drag down knock off fight over healthcare the last 4 years that you didn't hear about it until now

Anyways your school is probably feeding you BS and your friends probably don't know any better.

It may help it might help it might not go through I certainly wouldn't make a decision about that piece of legislation alone.

The WGU prelicensure BSN program has been up and running in southern CA since 2009. You do not have to be an LVN to be accepted, CNA will do, as well as other healthcare occupations. Two benefits of the WGU program are that they have clinical placements arranged by the school and the cost is very reasonable. It remains $4250 for six months of enrollment.

calotter3, is a good program but the problem is they have a stale date on lab classes. Any lab over 5 years has to be retaken. Good program otherwise.

Hi LadyinScrubs! You rock! You are so helpful and reading your posts make me feel confident that I made the right decision doing the LVN to BSN program through ISU. I live in so cal. Orange county to be exact. I just started the program last week. In fact, I'm starting from no pre-reqs and going through The college network, which I think is totally worth it. Anyways, my concern is clinicals. How can I find out what sites there are? I know it changes from time to time, but it's something I like to find out. Also, I currently work an at acute hospital, could I ask my hospital to precept. me?

Hi lilwhitehat... I saw that you are doing the isu program with gen ed. I would need to do the same. I was wondering sonfar how has it been for you since I am considering doing the same. I work full time and have 2 kids, so I know it will be a lot of hard work. I do live in California as well.

I have been out of the medical field for 10 yrs so that's why I was unaware of the new drama... I'm trying to catch up as I am entering the Nursing field I

I have an email from the Dean of the Nursing Deparment at Sonoma State University...

"The ISU/SSU program is currently not accepting new students into the partnership. Last May a student filed a complaint with the CA BRN that opened up legal complications with our partnership. I apologize as I am acutely aware of the consequences of this action. Other options that are available to students are listed under approved schools on the CA BRN website at www.rn.ca.gov. Once again my apologies."

So, it appears as though the partnership of ISU and Sonoma State are breaking up. Will ISU confirm this info? I called and emailed several people at ISU on Friday and they won't confirm or deny ANYTHING. So, best bet is to look somewhere else. I am. I have already paid $$$$ to TCN to do this program but hit appears to be falling apart.

I hope they dont shut this program down I dont know where else to go?

What are you going to do?

Are there other online LVN-RN programs that CA will accept?

My goal is to become a FNP, so if you know of a route I could go that CA will approve online please tell me since this might or is going to happen to future LVN-RN students

Hello to all, today I received an email from Indiana state school of nursing, which is stated that the partnership with Sonoma state university will be ending on December 2012; therefore, no new students will be admitted to the program. The ones already admitted will continue the program, but for now the program has been shut down until further notice :-( !

It sucks because I have turned in everything to start on spring 2013. .... I hate California now for not having enough nursing schools, not having enough faculty, and for having so expensive private schools !!!!

I empathize with you, me too I am already set to go into the program early summer of 2013 then this thing happened. Did you also recieve a letter of acceptance from ISU? Anyways, what about continuing the online studies then perhaps make arrangements with ISU where we can all take our clinicals by batch or cohort and take the NCLEX-RN out of state then get a reciprocity to be able to practice here in CA? Any input on this idea???

On Sept. 25th CSU Chancellor changed his recommendation and advised SSU not to enter further partnership contracts with ISU. This ends any future prospects of continuing with SSU in order to be able to offer clinicals in CA. In addition to that, current program was found NOT to be meeting BRN requirements even after the second progress report was submitted by ISU administration. You can read about it for yourself on Meeting materials link, but since the info about CSU Chancellor’s decision came out 2 days prior to the meeting you will not see that on the notes posted so far. http://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/meetings/brd/brd_materials_sep12.pdf p.208 and down.

You have to wait for the meeting notes and webcast to be posted in the coming days. At this time no further communication was provided by ISU administration to its current students.

I attended the September 27th California BRN Board meeting in which ISU had to discuss its non-compliant program. What I learned, after reading the information the Board posted on its website and listening to the testimony during the Board meeting, was ISU was a nursing school who was out of control. The nursing administrators ran the school as if they had no state board oversight. The LVN to BSN progrm had numerous student complaints, but the nursing administration, its administrators, or the dean took no action to solve those complaints. What I heard was ISU was noncompliant and flaunted the rules/laws the nursing school was to adhere to. Instead of working with the California Board of Nursing, the Indiana State University nursing department and its administrators lied to the California Board of Nursing to cover up wrong doing within the nursing program and to continue its operation.

I have no idea what the result of a nursing school lying to an investigative consumer protection agency would be, but the actions of the Indiana State University's nursing administration and dean is shocking and beyond belief. I do hope they are forced to take responsibility for their lies and covering up wrongdoing.

As to why the program shut down in California, well, ask yourself why such a profitable program would be shut down by the California State University Chancellor. My belief was that the Chancellor saw a corrupt program and put as much distance between Indiana State University's nursing program as he could.
