I'm so torn! Stay wth clinic job or take med surg offer?

Published

Hey guys.. Been offered a med surg job on nights... I've been at a clinic since I graduated. It's really great. Love the people I work with. The thing is, I'm not quite sure I know what type of nursing I want to do yet. I know the hospital would open more options for me. I know I'm at a cushy job right now but feel I need to put my time into getting acute care experience for my career. I am now so torn. Please help! What is best at this point in my career? I graduated almost 2 years ago.

Do you want me to flip a coin for you? My piggy bank is about three feet away.

I assume that you applied for the acute care job because you wanted it. They didn't just spontaneously contact you with an offer, right?

My gut says get med/surg experience. Perhaps if you can work 32 hours a week....every other weekend....you can be off a few week days and keep your foot in the clinic door so to speak, work their one day a week? It would be hard...just an option to think about.

Think about your career goals. What kind of nursing do you see yourself doing in the future? You sound pretty happy with the job you are at currently so I wouldn't make any decisions to move on unless you are 100% sure that this is a job you want or will lead you to what you want.

Just my 2 cents. Best wishes.

You claim to have a cushy job. Why give that away? Who is telling you that you need acute care experience?

If this were me, I'd keep the cushy job. The only viable reason for me to leave a cushy job is because another job pays significantly more.

I'd see if you could keep your clinic job and work PRN on the weekends on med surg. Many of my friends got their foot in the door this way

I totally agree!!!

It's also a great way to see if this is for you, without losing your current job. A friend of mine (happens to be a new grad) got a med/surg night position and with limited orientation on the unit was left to care for 7 pt's of his own with only one other new grad on the whole unit! :nailbiting: No one with real experience around to be found! Definitely made for an unsafe environment, especially if any pt's took a turn for the worse. Of course every hospital and every unit is different.

Good luck to you :)
