O.K. so maybe we are in a moral decline in America when crack addict unemployed scuzzbags cuss me out becuase I can't get an IV in his track marked arm and the other arm is broken up because he walked in front of a moving vehicle while high on coke.
Sorry, just venting here. But whatsupwiththat? Is the opinion of nurses so low that we can be treated with disrespect like that.
Of course, I immediately left the room.
Thanks for letting me rant. :)
I remember a druggie that actually offered to put in his own line cause he knew the best spot.
One time I was working with a hospice RN (male) that had previously done alot of regular home health work. He told me he actually had been sent to South Mo (skid row area of town) to care for a pateint living in a by the week motel. Guy had a hep lock, they were doing some sort of IV tx, and this nurse was supposed to be doing them. He said he KNEW they guy was shooting up after he left (couldnt prove it of course) . Moral opf that story is that if you cant get a vein, have the druggie pts find their own, they'll get one every time "and in some of the most interesting places".

Yep, I am so there with you tweety. And not only that kind of behavior, but is it not disrespectful for a pt's family to start taking notes of everything the nurse says and does, and then there are those who actually flip on the tape recorder everytime the nurse walks in! And we are supposed to be our naturally caring selves with that type of initial contact? Then there are the CNA's who work for private duty agencies who accompany an elderly client to the hospital and question you on everything, and tell you WHAT REALLY needs to be done, etc. etc. etc. Grin and bear it, then come here and talk about it! Thanks for allowing to vent!
I won't take that from abusive patients either Tweety...and would have immediately walked out as well AND returned with A) an AMA form and/or B) an order to give analgesics and antibiotics IM or PO.
I look at it this way: they DO have right to refuse. Then it becomes the doctor's problem as HE ordered the treatment. It is not my job to wheedle and argue with abusive crackheads.

If that happens aren't we allowed to insist the recorder be taken out of the room?
Please don't think I'm being judgemental. All my patients deserve the best of me and they get it. It's just a little weary of giving my best "customer" service and being cussed at. Sorry.
Don't think your judgmental just stressed out. I totally can relate especially as of late. Good luck and best wishes to you!:)

Tweety, we're with ya but I'm not sure who treats us worse, patients or other nurses.
