I'm thinking of Joining the Navy as a Nurse... ?

Published

How should I go about joining the navy? because my main goal is to become a navy nurse.

I have one more year left in nursing school before graduation.

I went to the navy recruiter today in my area, an enlisted navy recruiter, and they told me I can sign up and they will start me at the rank of E-3.

I've also heard there is a navy nurse officer program, but they gave vague details on that.

Is there a difference between E-3 and officer? I heard as an officer, you have more responsibility and you have to be a leader to lead people. I dont feel like I'm the type who can lead people, I'm more of a follower, tell me what to do, give me and assignment to do, and I'll do it.

THey also told me as an E-3, I will get 1500 a mont base pay plus other allowances for daily living, and 250 dollars for working in the naval hospital.

Does a navy nurse who starts at E-3, get paid by the hour when working at a naval hospital, like in civilian hospital? I'm a little confuse about how they get paid. I know in my area, the starting pay for graduates is around 26-30 dollars per hour, plus time and half for overtime. does the navy nurse get paid by the hour.?

If i want to join the navy, the pay has at least gotta be equal to what i make in civilian hospitals.

There is no ASAP for joining the military. You can count on at least a 6mo-1+yr long wait after starting your application process.

I'm a BSN, RN with less than a year of experience and I'm really considering in joining the NAVY. So how long will I have to wait if I contact a recruiter? Can somebody please give me a little timeline of the process so I have an idea.

I've read that based on my qualifications I can start as an officer? Is that 0-1 right? Please enlighten me. Thanks Nurses!

Hi Everyone, I was just wondering In Fall 2010, I will be on my last two years of obtaining my BSN, and would really like to get back into the military, I was prior service enlisted-6 years in the army, I've looked at the other services, but the Navy seems to be the one that takes the best care of their people. I've been considering doing the NCP program, but don't know who to contact...I know that it needs to be a medical recruiting officer, but there is no Navy where I'm currently at Lawton, Ok/Wichita Falls, TX area. Any info would be greatly appreciated, would like to start getting my packet ready so it's ready to go for the October 2010 board...thanks...

I have two Bachelor's degrees including my BSN in Nursing. A recruiter in Dallas was trying HARD to force me to make an appointment with him so I can take the ASVAB. He said if I passed it well enough he would send my name to an officer recruiter, but not until I take the ASVAB. I'm trying to become a Navy Nurse Officer. I seem to get the run around with these enlisted recruiters- I'm not even going that route. Any advice?

you should go online and search for health care recruiter in navy.. or call recruiting stations and ask for health care recruiter telephone number.

Why do you need an ASVAB if you already have your BSN? You need to call a recruiter that is specific for officers and healthcare professionals. From what I ca see you are calling an elisted recruiter, they have numbers to crunch each month; making goal. Make it you are fine don't you get a call from the old man and you don't want that. In the Air Force they have Healthcare Professional recruiters for MD's and RN's. The Navy has Officer recruiters, my husband was a recruiter for his last 4 and he told me that guy never should have done what he did. The recruiter should have connected you to the approperiate recruiter ASAP. Be advised these recruiters are not in every town but there is one in Irving TX 972-714-8343. Good Luck!

Thank you so much! After doing my research on here I realized I dont have to take the ASVAB in order to be an officer. I'm not sure why he kept pushing for me to take it, and would not connect me or give me a number to an officer recruiter. He wanted to come to my house to make me take the test, then if I passed he would "let" me talk to an officer recruiter. I wish they could just be honest and helpful from the start. Thanks! I will call him tomorrow.
