How should I go about joining the navy? because my main goal is to become a navy nurse.
I have one more year left in nursing school before graduation.
I went to the navy recruiter today in my area, an enlisted navy recruiter, and they told me I can sign up and they will start me at the rank of E-3.
I've also heard there is a navy nurse officer program, but they gave vague details on that.
Is there a difference between E-3 and officer? I heard as an officer, you have more responsibility and you have to be a leader to lead people. I dont feel like I'm the type who can lead people, I'm more of a follower, tell me what to do, give me and assignment to do, and I'll do it.
THey also told me as an E-3, I will get 1500 a mont base pay plus other allowances for daily living, and 250 dollars for working in the naval hospital.
Does a navy nurse who starts at E-3, get paid by the hour when working at a naval hospital, like in civilian hospital? I'm a little confuse about how they get paid. I know in my area, the starting pay for graduates is around 26-30 dollars per hour, plus time and half for overtime. does the navy nurse get paid by the hour.?
If i want to join the navy, the pay has at least gotta be equal to what i make in civilian hospitals.

Yep, "once a Marine, always a Marine." There is a process he has to go through or some type of application he needs to fill out for being a veteran. I had a friend in Italy that went through the same thing, I'll call him and ask him what he had to do. My friend was/is a contractor by trade, but while we were in Italy he ran the bowling center, plenty of free beer there. i'll let you know.

Any info you can find out would be much appreciated. I think he'd be down with any job that offered free beer...in fact I KNOW he would.
Does anyone know about opportunities in the Navy for NP's? How about NNPs? I assume if they exist, they'd be stateside.....
The navy does have NP, even NNP. However, there are fewer billets for Navy NNPs b/c not all navy hospitals have NICUs. So you would be limited to the 3 big: San Diego, Bethesda, or Portsmouth.
I hope that I get this right! New to the forums... I am an LPN and have been for seven years. I worked Med Surg for about 2.5 yrs right out of school and then agency nursing mostly in geriatrics. I am a Navy vetran interested in re-inlisting through the NCP. I am currently taking my last math and sociology course for my ASN at a community college. I will transfer to finish my BSN at which time I hope to apply for the NCP. As an LPN what pay grade will I be getting paid for while in my last two years of school? I also have a family now and am interested in knowing what type of allowance that I may recieve for housing once comissioned O1? Any advice or suggestions would be welcomed. I am reaching my 35th birthday in October. and hope that I am not getting to old.
Thank You!

You will have likely found tons of info about this by now, but I will try to help. By the way, I am searching about this kind of thing myself, with different parameters, of course... The "usual suspects" on these boards have been conspicuously absent, and you will be fortunate to have them chime in here.

Hi, and welcome!
In assuming that the Navy program works like the Army program... you will receive a $1000/month stipend while enrolled full time in nursing school (for up to 24 months)
You can go to militarytimes.com and look under pay charts to see all of the base pay and allowances amount for rank/Time in service. both of these will effect your pay (as you know being prior service) also your housing allowance depends on your duty location.
Good luck to you!

so currently i am in 10th grade, i done some looking around and during freshmen year of high school i picked the area i want to major in which is being a nurse. after looking at the website it looks pretty nice- i am planning on talking it over with my school consoler and looking more into it when i return home from studying in mexico. my main question is, should i just sign up right after high school or go to college then sign up? from what i hear it seems a better idea to study and get your bsn then sign up but i have not a clue. help?
get your BSN first! Trust me, it can be very difficult to get back to school once you are out for a while...before you know it, life happens. I am a second year BSN student now, and at 38, it is tough to juggle all the responsibilities of family and keep your head in the books.
I am not saying that it can't be done the other way, but you will be much better off getting the school out of the way now...besides, that way you will be drawing officer pay all the sooner
It is great to see a young person with a plan... I wish I had taken my future more seriously when i was your age...Good luck to you!

He was (or as he would say "IS") a Marine. It's nice to know that his service will earn him some precedence. Although he's not excited about being a stay-at-home dad, I'm sure he'd welcome some extra time at a German pub!
