I'm supposed to wear an "Ask me if I washed my hands!" button?!

Nurses Activism

Today, administrators launched a handwashing campaign, part of which includes having patient care staff wear giant buttons that say, "Ask me if I washed my hands!" Patients are encouraged to ask this of their nurse/CNA/etc. every time s/he walks into their room. Every time.

I find this incredibly insulting both to my intelligence and to my professional practice as an RN. I cannot imagine what patients must be thinking: does it imply that we don't know enough to wash our hands? What else do they need to be checking up on, if we can't be trusted to have washed our hands after patient contact?

I understand that the aim is to decrease the spread of microorganisms. We all learned that in Nursing Fundamentals. I've listened to all the inservices on handwashing, antimicrobial foam and gel, and standard precautions ad nauseum. But this is way over the top. I don't ask my mechanic if he remembered to put all the parts back in my car and I don't ask my accountant if she used a calculator to figure out my taxes. I don't think I should be asked over and over if I'm doing my job, either.

We've had a hard enough time trying to be recognized as professionals without this nonsense. If I wanted to wear giant silly buttons at work I'd be waiting tables at TGI Fridays.

I told one of the administrators I'd consider wearing one if all the docs had to wear them, too. It's been a long time since I've seen some of them lather up before performing a bare-handed dressing change.

This is incredibly insulting. The few people that might do this probably don't "forget", they just don't bother. So their answer to that patient is certainly not going to be "no, I didn't remember". WHO would admit to that. Then the pt will think, 'what else did they not remember.' Reminders can be posted for staff in other ways, like on the charts, the patients door, etc. It's not the patient's job to monitor if we are practicing basic healthcare skills. Funny things is, I recently read a study where health care professionals were watched on camera for handwashing, and DOCTORS were the worst offenders.

actually the saying for the button wearer is supposed to be.. either yes i have washed my hands or no i didnt let me do it now... and i agree with the earlier post about the button being another source for germs... do we have to clean it with clorox after we see each patient.:uhoh3:

etc. It's not the patient's job to monitor if we are practicing basic healthcare skills. .

Actually, as a "Consumer of Healthcare Service" I believe it IS every patients "Job" and responsibility to monitor healthcare practices. I also believe that patients should ask their doctor questions about his/her experiences dealing with their particular illness/injury/condition.

Would we as consumers tolerate a restaraunt where only 50% of the cooks washed their hands after using the bathroom? As "healthcare professionals"

we should not "Have to be made to wear a stupid button", but the growing rate of In-House Infections demand that we try EVERYTHING from buttons to cameras to education.......oh yeah, that is what nursing school is for.

you know what i agree that we should ask our nurses and doctors questions, about anything we are uncomfortable with, i welcome any questions.. but i aslo know that i wash my hands constantly , thats why now alot of places have the hand sanitizer because i like many others nurses have washed their hands so much the skin has peeled of of them and they were burnnig. now they are just used to the abuse. Peole should observe before they just criticize , alot of the times if you watch people and observe you can see that they washed their hands .......... anyway i wore that button proudly ,even though i did complain to my nurse manager about it... i wore it and it wasent so bad....

It may not be the patient's place to monitor their healthcare provider but if they do not, who will. I always watch everyone who takes care of me. And when I see a beak, I note it and watch them even more closely. It does take to long to figure out who cuts the rules and thinks they are not doing anything wrong. I am just as angry at the staff of a NYC hospital who gave a good friend an MRSA infection. Sorry, break techniqic and I will note it. Break it again and you will be reported. Break it a third time, don't take care of me or anyone I love.

Exactly.

Agree to wearing the button as long as you can also wear a button that says, "I'm here to save your butt, not kiss it." Seriously, is administration wearing the buttons, too?

no , i have not seen them wearing them...

I know..this is a great shame. Nurses do not unite enough. This should not be tolerated. It is degrading and insulting. Why not have the physicians and surgeons wear these. After 25 years of experience, I know that these are the individuals who need to actually be reminded to "wash their hands".

What it oughta say is, "Ask your visitor if they washed their hands." :nurse:
