This is my first time on allnurses and I really need some good advice on what to do. I'm enrolled in a Liberal Arts & Science college (as a freshman for the fall) that does not have a nursing program, yet I really want to transfer into one, but the thing is my credits are most likely non transferable.
Here is my schedule for my 1st fall semester (my intended major was biology to become a vetnarian):
Biological science foundations w/lab
Chemical science foundations
Writing studies 1
Cultural Anthropology
Introduction to Philosophy
Statistics
All freshman's are required to take the general studies so I wasn't given an option on what I wanted to take for future nursing school.
So now I'm stuck in a bind and I don't know what to do. I already deposited the $500 for my dorm room and accepted/awarded my finacial aid and scholarships.
Please respond, I'm really stressing out over this.
Community college and transfer sounds like a reasonable plan. Except for one thing: According to what I see on their website, the University of Chicago doesn't have an undergraduate nursing school, so you won't be transferring credits into a nursing program there. Majors and Minors | The College
I hope you are getting the idea that you have to look into things more closely. I'm sorry you're already committed to your dorm and your student aid. Now it's time to do some intensive homework on colleges with nursing programs, perhaps in many different areas of the country, and then see what they will require in transfer and how your present schedule fits into that.
It is possible that you may have to take an extra year or semester to get in the courses you need to achieve the goal of applying to a nursing program (and I have no idea what happens to your loans if you transfer, but you'll have to learn that too). Good luck.

I am confused and did no realize that there were nursing schools that required no prerequisite courses. As a non traditional student just accepted to a highly sought after nursing program I have to say you should follow your dreams and try not to waste money doing it. I know many people who have attended private or technical schools to find out that they can't land the career they want because their "degree" is actually just a "certificate." Is your deposit refundable? Why would have to wait a whole year? Couldn't you just start somewhere in the spring?
First, make a list of where you want to go for nursing programs.
Then call the Advisors of each program and determine exactly what credits are transferable and which credits are non-transferable.
Should you decide to transfer, contact your institution's financial aid office and ask about returning "unused aid." Fall hasn't started yet so you have some time before funds are disbursed.
Worst case, you ride out for one year, take courses that can transfer and leave during your sophomore year. RELAX! This happens all the time.
Or withdraw all together, go to a community college and take care of your pre-req's and transfer into a 4 year nursing program. But more than anything, RELAX! These are some of the best years of your life. Enjoy them!!
Thank you! Oh and good news: I am now taking coursecourses that will go towards my nursing degree. I talk to the school I want to transfer into next year and they told me since it's a direct entry private university that they don't require perquisites and I should be fine If I could get at least a 3.0 and pass my entrance exam.
