I'M ****** OFF!!!!!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I just found out that NYC Tech no longer provides professor information when registering for classes - so you have no idea which professor you're getting!!

Excuse me??? - Why can't I know which professor I'll be getting - I'm paying out of my pocket for these classes and want to make sure I'm not getting some "hard-ball" teacher that doesn't really care about their students!!

I suppose that NYC Tech has taken this measure because of the info. on ratemyprofessors.com

However, they seem to be special since other cuny schools aren't participating in this sort of non-sense!

I am registered for A&P1 for the summer, and A&PII for the Fall and would also like to possibly get a heads up on the syllabus (if I would've known who the professor was/is). - This really SUCKS!! - As I know A&P professors can sometimes make a break an A&P course.

This ****** me off so much - this school is the most convenient for me (I'll be going after work) - I get there in literally 10 minutes.

I suppose I could try the biology department - and maybe see if they give me the info. I'm looking for.

--Thanks for letting me vent!!:banghead::banghead::banghead:

The ratings have been pretty consistent on what I consider makes a good teacher and reviews can give you insight on what to expect. You read a bad rating that says hard but you like hard then maybe that's your teacher.

I feel old ... because I can answer this question :) ... we used to actually "talk" with our classmates and get info on who was good or lousy

Don't say that makes you feel old. That's how I have done it, if I know people that already have taken a subject before, and I can't accept I am old yet :p

After checking out RMP a few days ago and seeing what was said about past professors by majority. I would NEVER use that to pick my teacher. If anything, I suppose I will pick the teacher everyone is ******** about. LOL

I agree that it's important to not base everyone on RMP, but you have to look at the original poster. She said that they aren't putting the professor's names up at all. So how can you ask someone whether the professor is good or not when there are no names for you to choose from?

As for the poster, give it a few weeks or so, I know it sucks having to wait to make a schedule but seeing as some of the other courses for FALL 2009 do have professors listed on them, science might just be the last one. In my school Bio classes are always the toss up. You register but by the time the class starts, there's a completely different professor from the one that was listed at the time of registration.

Some of the best professors I've had got terrible ratings on RMP. I think that some students want to put the blame on someone else when they do poorly, so they bash the professor with bad reviews. In my opinion, Ratemyprofessor.com is not a very reliable source to get information about professors.

Do you guys realize that many of the ratings on RateMyProfessor are bogus? Professors and their friends use the site to post about themselves, their friends, etc. -- sometimes with overly positive ratings/comments and other times with negative ones. Some faculty make a game of it.

You would get a far more reliable information by making friends among the upperclassmen in your program. Talk to several of them in order to get a variety of perspectives. Don't just rely on 1 or 2 opinions that might be way off base ... and be careful of putting too much stock in an anonymous internet site (e.g. RMP) on which faculty are known to manipulate the ratings.

Sure, a good teacher can explain it to you. A good student doesn't need the teacher to explain it...

So lets get rid of teachers and students all together then. If you're good you'll just learn yourself.......

somethings messed up, my post should be after atheos's not before.

Students are the least qualified to 'pick' a good teacher.

That is completely and entirely untrue. I earned my B.A. magna cum laude w/disciplinary honors in my field, so I was one of the most truly dedicated students in the History department. However, I have gone on to RMP to inform students of what the expectations were and which teachers were the best INSTRUCTORS. After taking a course who else is better in determining whether they were adequately educated? I had professors whose lectures were scatted confusing and non-sequential, I had professors who were not adequately prepared to instruct the course, I had professors whose courses were so non-challenging that I felt I wasted the entire semester (getting an A no less) but didn't learn anything. But I also had professors who were absolutely wonderful, I had to work my butt off for most of my As, but I learned so much!!! They are the ones who get my praise. I remember one biology instructor who was so awesome. I earned an A, of course, but she was so clear in her explanations, her powerpoints were innovative and demonstrative that I learned and retained the information--this course actually had the highest fail rate at the university. To this day (5 years later) I can explain cellular respiration like I have a PhD in metabolism. In fact, I tutored that class my entire 4 remaining years at the university.

But that is subjective. You say they are a good teacher. Someone else says they were to tough. Someoen else didn't like them.

Therefore it is completely and entirely true.

Since these sites are purely subjective it's not the greatest method of finding out. You could get lucky but you could get unlucky. One anecdotal example hardly changes the fact that auditing and seeing in person is a better method.

The rest is irrelevant. Sure, a good teacher can explain it to you. A good student doesn't need the teacher to explain it...

I don't think I agree with that either. If the student already knew it all and didn't need to ask questions, then they wouldn't need the class. Part of being a good student is to ask questions and make sure you are understanding the material, one shouldn't feel ashamed if they are needing it explained or are needing clarification, it doesn't make them a bad student.

Just read around on this site and you can see where some students are not capable of judging what makes a good teacher, mainly because they are far from a good student. Sadly it doesn't change once they are out working either. How many posts can you find here where someone is complaining about how mean their teacher is yet they take no responsibility for themselves. Or how their boss hates them as well. It's funny because these people are the most "unlucky" people. You read their posts after time and start to see a patters, EVERYONE ELSE is unfair or mean and they are the VICTIM. If all people could be reasonable and take responsibilities for themselves and their education, then sure I bet a lot of the ratings could be more fair. But sadly that isn't the case.

I am capable even getting a C in my class, in saying, the teacher was GOOD, he was tough, yet he was equal and fair and I should have applied myself more. A lot of other people would place all blame on the teacher and flame them.

For the record, I am not speaking about the OP at all in my above statement. I don't know you or the type of student you are, I am speaking in general.

The site is really messing up, the above quote was not Athenos, it was Adams mommy.
