Ok, here's the story:
I just graduated from my ADN program here in Houston. A few days ago, I logged on to the Texas BON to register to take my jurispurdence test and NCLEX. So, I'm looking at the first page of the registration, and there are a few questions concerning felonies, misdemeanors, blah blah blah. That does not apply to me, since I've never broken the law. HOWEVER, after the "legal" section, I see a question that goes along the lines of "have you ever been Dx, hospitalized, or treated for schizophrenia, pshychotic conditions, bipolora disorders.... within the past 5 years?" Well, that's where they got me; but maybe not. 3 years ago, i went through a very depressing period of time, and it got so out of hand that I checked myself into a mental hospital here in houston. I was only there for 5 days, and was discharged. I was Dx with depression. So here's the situation. On the Tbon site, where they mentioned a few of the mental conditions, they did not specifically mention depression. So if i were to honestly answer the question, i would answr NO. Since i was Dx with depression and this was not specifically mentioned in the question. But I am afraid that if I answer no, and Tbon starts investigating and finds out that i've been in a mental hospital before, are they going to penalize me or keep me from getting my license?
Can anyone please offer any feedback into this situation? I would greatly appreciate it.
Believe me you are not a nut case. I was diagnosed with sever major depression and told txbon. My psychiatrist submitted a letter to them essentially saying that I am in remission and comply with medication and that I am not a threat to anyone. I sent in information with the declaratory order and received the "okay" to take nclex just two weeks later from board. Do not worry, if it is just depression, and if it is major depression-no worries either! You will be great-PM me if I can try to help in any way
If I remember correctly....is asks if you've ever been hospitalized or dx with schizo, bipolar, etc.? Just the hospitalization question alone would lead me (if I were you) to answer yes and give the explanation they are asking for. Many people are depressed and if we all were not allowed to get our licensed bc of depression than they're wouldn't be any nurses. A lot of people suffer with depression and although, I do not know all about the tbon, I do not think they are allowed to hold a license from you bc of depression. I would tell the truth though. No need to lie about it.

Sounds like the answer is no if they aren't specifically asking about depression. Don't worry yourself too much about them investigating you and finding out about your hospitalization. How would they get access to your medical records to know you were hospitalized in the first place? You would have to give permission for that to happen.
