Congrats on the ER job!

Make sure, for your own good, that your new position includes a good portion of orientation. Make sure that they're going to teach you to critical care stuff that you're going to need.

Our new grads have a 16-18 week orientation, including 5 weeks in class plus the alphabet courses (ACLS, TNCC, PALS or ENPC, etc.). It sounds like a long road and it is, but we also haven't lost a new grad during it and most hang around with us until something changes in their lives (usually a baby).

Good luck!

CONGRATS!!!! :)

I know you are on cloud 9!!! :)

Save me a seat, I live close by, and would love to work there!! Did you get your RN or LVN??

I am starting the LVN class in June, and then after 1 yr, go straight to the RN program next July 08....because everything is such a LONG wait list to just start, much less finish all my pre-reqs and then wait to get accepted, and then wait to start once accepted. I can get my LVN 2x in the time it would take to get my RN!!

Blessings to you!!! You must have such a great feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment!!!

God is Good!!!

Take care,

Deborah

Congrats on your job and welcome to the best part of nursing. Be sure to go with an internship program - that is the best for a new grad starting in an ER. Also, be sure to work on your "alphabet" (ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC, etc), as those will help teach you some of the finer points of ER nursing. Just go with the flow and enjoy the challenges each day brings. Welcome aboard!

sadly we don't have those here in our province. My orientation (just had a few details so far) includes: ~7 classroom days then 16 preceptored shifts, which can be extended if it is deemed necessary. This is only the 2nd year they have accepted new grads, but the one they took last year is still there and doing well, currently completeing the ER nursing course (it is only offered twice a year so the earliest i could start would be the fall). In an ideal world i would have found a position with a long and well-established residency, but alas they're not available here. Guess i'll just have to worm my way into gaining their respect and trust and then start pushing for them to develop such a program.

oh and i just did 16 preceptored shifts in our local level 1 er, and that went pretty well, so really it's more like 32 shifts i guess. oh well, i'm still excited!!!

good luck....

I just got hired as a new grad in an E.D. and have 5 weeks of med surg preceptorship just to get some organizational skills then I go to the E.D. and am with a preceptor another 12 weeks or until I am ready to be set free. Plus 12 classroom days. All that is on top of my 10 years of EMS experience.
