I'm very confused what people mean by their GPA

Published

People always ask questions like "What was your GPA when you got accepted"

I only know only 2 types of GPA:

The overall GPA and pre-req GPA

Which one are people talking about?

Which GPA do the nursing programs use to prioritize the list for people to be accepted? It's very confusing... How do they prioritize people..?

Pre-req GPA is normally what schools look at. They use those grades in those classes to determine if your cut out for the program.

It's weird because I've spoke to 4 advisers and they all told me different things

One adviser said they only look at overall GPA, then another one said they look at pax-rn scores and pre-req GPA but the overall is secondary measure, they are all giving me different answers so I'm just asking you guys :/

At my school you have two GPA'a that count, overall and core pre-req's (the three "big sciences" and English). At my school they use a lottery but you can't qualify if your overall isnt at least 2.5, and your pre-req isn't at least 3.5 (that means only one science can be a B.). My program is fairly easy, but 500 people apply for 18 seats. The local Uni (BSN) takes overall GPA no less than 3.75 pre-req's generally need to be 4.0 and they use a points ranking.

I think when people say "what was your GPA", they are talking the overall.

Were the advisers you were talking to all at the same school? Because that will maybe clear up some things. Each school has it's own list of criteria they look for. Some schools look at cumulative GPA, and that's it. Others score several things, such as cumulative GPA, core science GPA, etc. So it really depends.

We have a specific adviser who deals only with the nursing program. She knows all. The rest don't always know.

I believe it depends on the school. Some look at your pre-req gpa, and others look at overall. Check the requirements of the programs that you are applying to. All the best!!

You really need to check with the nursing dept. Mine only counts specific pre req. not all. So your science gpa is what gets counted...

ant.1&2 with labs

Micro with lab

stats

alg.

That is it.

The rest are req. a C or better but dont count toward the gpa.

Thank you all for your responses,

yes all the advisers I talked to were in the same school

These are the requirement:

However every professor said different things

I mean like, wouldn't it not be fair if someone did pre reqs before any other classes and applied so that they can maintain an overall GPA?

It seems from that link only the ones listed as pre clinical count. You must have 3.0. Those are the ones they count towards your application. Regardless of the other classes, they will only count that. Hopefully you dont go in and fail some other courses..but if you did they dont count it. So everyone is on the same grounds regardless how many classes you have taken or need to take. It really does make it easier for them if they just count specific classes. Someone that has 120 credits from another degree wouldnt be in better standings then if you only had those 13 and had the same grades.

My school looks at both. I have 130+ credits and they look at all of those! Then they look at pre-req and then science GPA.

Yea I figured it all out, I called the nursing department and they told me they only look at pre-reqs.

This was good news for me however, I am really skeptical about advisers now because a lot of them say different things and they don't even know what they are talking about.

This just shows that advisers just talk the talk... One said they check all the classes, yet another one says they check both, then another one said they check only pre reqs...:sniff:
