When I got into nursing, It was just an opportunity to get a good job with benefits for me and my kids. That was truly the reason I took a job as a CCU tech. After I did that for 2 yrs I fell in love with nursing and all I could think of morning noon and night was getting into nursing school and becoming a nurse. I did it too.
The only reason I would say No now is the families that have gotten out of control. I still love taking care of the critically ill. I retired in 2005 and stil dream about working about once a week. I really miss it.
I would keep it, but would do things differently in school and not go into M/S after school. Yes, I'd definitely go in a different direction with my specialty. And, I might have went BSN right off the bat. But I didnt know I'd get married right after graduation and have someone there for support. So, hindsight is 20/20 I guess.
With the end of my masters program in sight and the prospect of working as an advanced practice nurse becoming more real every day, I would say that as of now I am happy with my decision. But....not so sure my answer would be the same if my choices were limited to bedside RN. It is good, honest, honorable work, but I can't imagine doing it for the next 20 years. I have learned so much as a bedside nurse, and have amassed a lifetime worth of stories.
Not sure if there is such a career that would pass the "20 year" test. I am amazed at the number of conversations at work with other RNs and RTs with topic of "finding that new amazing career".

If any of you could do it over again, would you keep or change your career?
