OH MY LORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about the yelling but I just can't take it. I just submitted my app today to get on waiting list at my CC. well apparently the waitlist is already up to 465!!! so it will probably be over 500 by the time they process me. I have no idea what I going to do. I already have a BS degree so lots of my credits transferred and I have two semesters worth of pre-reqs to take. So then I guess I will just sit idle until they call my magic number. I could try the other local college but that is a BSN program and I don't know if I can manage to work full time or not. (which i have too). the next closest CC is about 50 miles away. I am at my wits end. sorry for the long vent

kris

kris, for a shortage it sure seems like there are SOOO many of us waiting, or on waiting lists.

Remember that 2/3rds of those who begin nursing school wont finish. How many does your CC accept each year? Is there a good chance you will be placed by the time you need to be?

Look into the BSN program and talk to some students who are in it now, see if they are able to cope with working and school. Then make a decision....

Good luck!

I would apply to all schools that are close. With a wait list of 500 you could probably go part time to the BSN program and still finish around the same time you would if you were just waiting.

WAIT LIST OF 500, SHEEEEESH!?!

I wouldn't discount the BSN program either. They often have shorter waiting lists. I applied to two accelerated programs- was waitlisted at one, accepted at the other.

From what I hear the wait at CCs around here is long. Lots of qualified people aren't getting in the first year they apply.

I know how you feel, I will finish my prereqs this fall and the waiting list for local adn programs is long, 300 apply every semester and only 80 get in. I am mega stressed out, I don't wanna wait forever! So if I don't get into the spring semester 04 than I will have to reapply in fall and keep reapplying until I get in.

If I don't get in for spring I am going to try the 6-week CNA program because if I don't do something I might go crazy form the wait. So if I don't get in a timely manner (news report said wait time can be 2yrs) than I may go LVN to RN because those people at my cc and hospital workers get in first....

I cannot believe they have a waiting list of 500! When I started nursing school in 1998, the admission interview lasted about 5 minutes. No questions, no tests, just my statement I wanted to be a nurse. There were only 15 in my graduating class. Our school was desperate. I have now heard they have a waiting list too. What a turn around!

When is the best time to apply to the actual program? I am in the pre-clinical sequence now. Taking Chemistry in the Fall as prerequisite for A&P I. I have CHEM, A&P I and II, and Microbiology to do. That is not many classes and I was wondering when I should apply. Any advice?

I would ask your school about that. Most schools accept applications after A&P I

I just got through the waiting list process here; of course I was eventually denied and all I can do is try again... "due to an exceptional number of applicants this year...."

The best things you can do for yourself are:

1) Don't put all your eggs in one basket! Apply to schools you want to go to, but also to ones that you have a good chance of getting into.

2) Make yourself into as great an applicant as you can: master your foreign language(s), do volunteer work/work with a mentor, etc..

I have my BS too, that doesn't really help when you're one of 400+ applicants and only 40 spots. You need to stand out. My application last year had no interview, just a one page statement of purpose, my transcripts and letters of rec.

If you haven't finished your last couple of prereqs, and your GPA >3.8, my experience out here is you won't get in. Please don't let me get you down! There's a whole crew of us here.

Good Luck! If your heart is in it, you'll find a way to make it happen!

This really strikes a cord. (Warning, Vicky is getting on her soap-box!) It's time to get politically involved. The real issue is a SHORTAGE OF NURSING FACULTY that is only going to get worse if the legislators don't get off their high horses and do something about it. See my post:

A year ago I left a job at the hospital on a pretty decent unit (despite the fact that it had its share of bullies, but that is another thread:eek: ). I gave up TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR to work as an RN instructor at the community college. My faculty job has its perks and much more respect than being a staff nurse and I really enjoy working with students and having clinicals in new and exotic places..... BUT, most people are NOT willing to give up that kind of money and THAT IS WHY WE ARE HAVING A SHORTAGE and THIS IS WHY THERE ARE WAITING LISTS A MILE LONG!!!!! Get involved. Write your legislators. Tell them you're tired of seeing the community college system treated like the red-haired stepchild and they need to fairly compensate all of the hard working instructors!!! I will step down off of my soap-box now. And by the way, I really feel for you guys. I wish there were more of us and we could accomodate you all. There just aren't enough of us to go around.:o

So where can I go to tell someone about it?
