"we called everyone and no one will come in, and there's no agency available you're running short staffed tonight." I'll just scream. Everytime someone calls in sick they can't be replaced.
Why in one ear are they telling me I'm going to be short staffed and the other telling me we're getting admits!. :angryfire
I refused to take admits, saying we are short and I need time to take care of the three I just got, so what do they do? They fax report, call housekeeping themselves and bring the patient under the direction of the supervisor. I'm so angry if I wouldn't loose my license I'd quit right now.
Thanks. I feel so much better. Now I'll go back to looking up that med I was looking up, but just wanted to scream to someone who knows what I'm talking about, you know?
:rotfl:I refused a ridiculous assignment last week - I had 7 patients with a CNA and 3 empty beds on a day shift. The charge nurse said 'I have to give you 3 admissions because you have the empty beds.'
I think what makes me angry is the fact that they even ask. They know the beds aren't staffed and still expect you to admit to them. Sigh....

Guess they're just testing to see how much crap the nurse will accept.
Good for you, Sadie04.
Maybe we all need to wear a "zero tolerance for administrative bullcrap" sign on our backs... and then stand by it. :stone
Exactly! This is exactly what to do...sneaking them in the back door or not, I'd pull that "supervisor" out to the nurse's desk, have the "refusing assignment d/t unsafe conditions" form signed, hand it to her and tell her, she will be the nurse staying and caring for the pt. I'd also have my mgr on the phone!
Tweety.......have that supervisor sign a note in front of witnesses that says she/he will take full responsibility for what happens to that patient if things go sour with the patient on a unit that practices unsafe patient-nurse ratios. I'd LOVE to see the look on his/her face with that option. :rotfl:
As others have posted, you are not alone.
What's worse, there have actually been times the supervisor has said, "Oh, I called everyone" and the next day, we find out, the nurses who had been off HAD NEVER BEEN CONTACTED (Caller ID does help you know if the hospital calls or not!). Do people think we are stupid and can't find this stuff out???

This thread is scary. At my hospital, if we don't have the staff to admit more patients, the patients DON'T get admitted!!
Imagine that concept. Admitting only the patients you have the staff to safely care for (including critical care!).
Unfortunately that means loss of revenue. Each patient we divert to another ER costs big bucks and the bean counters are loathe to pass up on any bucks.
