Another currently active thread is asking why nursing is such a horrible job and there are many responses detailing posters opinions. My question is: if it's THAT horrible, why not quit? And, I know that everyone will say, "it's the economy, stupid!!", but, really, if you feel that your job is horrible . . . why stay?
Just a question that I want to throw out there. If nursing per say is bad, arent there other areas that are less stressful such as NP, or CRNA, or something like that? I am just curious. Thanks everyone. Have a wonderful New Years :)
Wow, are you kidding? Do you think being a CRNA or NP is stress free? Puh-leeze. And it's not like you can just jump into them, either. Those areas require schooling and it's not easy.

Because eating, having shelter and warmth are quite important, as well as paying all of those other nasty bills that come every motnh...

NP and CRNA couldn't be called less stressful plus you normally need a certain amount of experience to enter most programs and then pay for school while not being able to work (CRNA) or having to work part time(NP-unless you work all weekends) while attending school and pay bills.

Ive learned there are certain aspects of the job I detest.
In the clinic= the manager was a nutter butter, and totally unapproachable. And i hated all the time I spent on the phone with patient's insurance companies!
In the hospital= the politics, egos and unrealistic expectations from the adminstration to the patients/families.
My goodness! I am one person, and can only do so much! Just let me do my job, and enough of the public relations aka kiss your ass!!!
In the last 2 years that I returned to bedside nursing, I have been able to pay off loans and credit cards. This has been a HUGE relief, and has given me that sense of control again.
I will start 2010 by working 2 days per week, and may pick up an occasional per diem shift with my agency.
Well, I did quit and had to return because my husband now how severe health issues and can't work and we have a large family. I had to go back to a field I could step right back into and would pay almost what he made. Believe me, when I say I wore black to my interview and it wasn't because it was the right color for an interview.I was happy being a volunteer and working toward a paid position for advocacy groups for Special Ed kids in school. It was my niche and my passion. Sadly it doesnt even begin to pay what I make now, so my dream job is just that, a dream job.
I'm also one that wonders why people choose to stay where they are miserable but your post is one of the few that I totally understand. My heart goes out to you and kudos for doing what you need to do to keep your family afloat. I hope you find an area of nursing that is bearable. Have you thought about pediatric psych or school nursing? A neuro psych unit might just be a happy medium for you if you like adovcating for special ed kids. Good luck.
I'm going to try to get into position to do something else in healthcare. But there are some aspects of bedside nursing that I do really enjoy (it is not 100% horrible in every way!).
Also, I feel some responsibility to the patients. Like, it's a crappy job, but somebody's got to do it. While I'm not exactly an excellent nurse, I'm a pretty good nurse. Who knows who would replace me, someone as good or even better, but maybe someone worse...

It's just so easy to say "If you don't like your job, why don't you just quit?", isn't it? It's just sooooooooo easy. Who can just quit? And honestly, that statement is irritating as heck. It's not that the job is horrible, just certain aspects of it.
