Ideas for a peer teaching project

Published

I have a peer teaching project due in a couple of weeks time, but I'm not sure what to base my project on. However, it has to be OB, or peds related. I was thinking about basing it on Kwashiorkor, or a genetic disorder such as Tay-Sachs disease, but I would like to teach my fellow peers something that may be of use to them for the NCLEX-RN that we need to take after we graduate on May next year. I'm not sure if those conditions would be covered on the licensure exam. Does anyone have any other ideas out there? Thanks

why don't you teach them how to assess for the physical differences that can be observed in children who have one of the more common childhood diseases or disorders that is likely to be on the nclex. be sure to include how it affects their developmental milestones. there are pediatric weblinks that you can use to help you find this information on this thread: https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/medical-disease-information-258109.html - medical disease information/treatment/procedures/test reference websites

Hi Daytonite,

Thx for the feedback there. I would love to teach my fellow peers about how to properly assess a child, but, I do feel it is beyond me. I think I will try to do a peer project on asthma or DM type 1 as they are more common, and even though we, as a class, have reviewed such conditions, I do feel that I can contribute to my fellow peers somewhat when I try to teach them. Also, thanks there for reminding me about developmental milestones in your reply. My instructor stresses the importance of them.

you don't need to teach how to do a complete assessment of a child, just what would be different in the assessment of a child with a disease such as asthma or type i dm would be different, in other words, the physical signs and symptoms you would find. something i would definitely do is visit the kidshealth website ([color=#231f20]http://www.kidshealth.org). i can't remember if they list out the different childhood diseases by types or body systems. but they do have listings by parent, child and teen. something else to consider is common childhood emergencies. one time i had a neighbor come banging on my door (its amazing how people seem to know where the nurses in the neighborhood are) upset because she thought her daughter swallowed some rubbing alcohol and wanted to know what she should do. i'm a telemetry nurse! at a young age, once kids shove stuff in their mouth they can't spit it out and it keeps going forward and down the gullet. school age kids get into poison ivy, bug bites, bee stings that can lead to anaphylaxis. do make sure you hit on those milestones and address erickson because your instructors will be looking for that and it can give you that extra boost you need to get an a for this assignment. good luck.
