IART 117 Intro to the Arts

Nursing Students Ohio University

Published

Since Simply Complicated suggested that there are at least 3 of us in this class for the summer session, I tought I'd start a thread about it.

Gripe number 1: I've only taken the nursing courses and so haven't had to use Blackboard until now. I'm not diggin' the system: Too many screens to navigate through, clunky interface, breadcrumbs either not enabled or nor working, mouse buttons not enabled. Very 1990's technology. End of gripe.

This is very important info since i was somewhat off base as to the expectations. Well thanks for the info, now i will have to approach the blog from a different angle. Moreover i thought they said this blog was only supposed to be our notes in preparation for the paper, so why are these strict requirements for something that is ONLY our notes.

That's not acceptable. Interface with the TA is essential in on-line courses and if there are hard deadlines - as there are in this course - a timely response is an absolute obligation on the TA's part. I would absolutely let the instructor know. I also think I'd e-mail the other class members whose questions went unanswered letting them know what I was doing and urging them to do the same. Hope things work out for you.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will probably do that. I had asked a question regarding the play, and another when I was having issues with the blog and got no response. The only help I received was from another student.

Has anyone had experience with Safe Assign, the plagiarism checking application that is used in this course? Specficially, how does it work and what do professors do with the report?

We had a chance to submit our draft papers to Safe Assign and frankly, I'm a bit frightened that anyone would rely on this system. In my case the report returned a "6% Matching" remark and links to two websites that I hadn't visited in the course of my research. One link was to a Cleveland newspaper web site and an article about an award being presented to the author of one of the books I used (and cited multiple times) as a reference. The other was to the humongous on-line bookseller, BigBrazilianRiver.com, specifically to the page listing the other book used (and also cited multiple times) as a reference. As far as I can tell, the only way 6% of the words used in my draft can be the same as those in the two links is if they count every word and short phrase, such as "the", "and" and "such as" as matches.

I plan on a substantial re-write of my draft but I'm scared that I'll accidentally increase my matching even more. I suppose that I could just add many more citations and references, just to make sure that I haven't accidentally used the same word or phrase as someone else did. that seems a bit ridiculous but probably no more so than a professor relying heavily on software like Safe Assign.

It is mostly looking for plagarism from the cut and paste crowd. I had one come in at 19% which included the name of the book I was reviewing, the authors and one particular phrase that was from the reading - oh and Ohio University also popped up in the report. As long as you cite, you are fine!

Is anyone else confused on what it is they are looking for as far as historical context of the painting, or has any suggestions? The painting I picked as to do with a war. But in the comments for my blog, he says not to focus on the actual history, but the historical context. I'm confused as to what it is they are looking for. The artist painted the picture as a way to show how he feels the world is changing, he painted a lot of animals, and changed from the type to a darker animal (wolves).

Here's part of the comments I got

Remember that this paper is to focus on historical context, not description, of the work of art, though of course some description will be necessary.

While this paper is about context, make sure the paper focuses on the PAINTING and not on history.

So I can talk about the war, but obviously they don't want a history lesson on it. I just don't get exactly what they are wanting.

Well i got that same exact comment, i thought they said not to focus on the painting in terms of description on more on the history, so i was a bit confused when i got that comment.

Oi, I just don't get it. The beginning of my comments said great job, these notes will set you up for a great paper, or something of that effect. I just don't know how much you can write about what the artist meant to portray by their painting in relation to what it's about. Each time they offer more direction it confuses me more.

What they are looking for (I think) is a discussion of how the painting fits in the context of its contemporary history. So if you chose a painting such as Picasso's "Guernica" which was painted in response to the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, you could talk about the effects of the war on general Spanish population as reflected in the painting and what Picasso was trying to accomplish with the painting. Maybe throw something in about the reaction of the art critics both in and outside of Spain to the painting and how Guernica may have influenced public opinion about the war. You could probably also throw in some stuff about the painting - its composition, use of color (actually, I think it's B&W, but you get the point), depiction of the characters, etc, and how that relates to the point the artist may have been trying to make. Not too much interpretation though. I also think I'd pay close attention to the rubric and make sure I hit the points there. Good luck.

I'll have to do more research I think. I found a lot about the artist and some of his other paintings, but not this particular one. Oh well, I'm doing very well in the class, so if I loose a few points, I'm not going to sweat it, lol

My blog, which was really a draft of my paper, had a paragraph about the artist (he was a fairly controversial figure at the time). The TA commented that it was fine for the blog but that the paper needed to concentrate on the context of the artwork, not the history of the artist.

They appear to have given similar comments to most people. I compared my comments with some of the original posted instructions, and it's a bit contradictory.

Anyone still following this, lol? We've been pretty quiet this summer. Just curious if everyone got their discussions done for module 7? The course schedule says through the 5th, which is Sunday as it has been the entire class. But when I logged in just after midnight Saturday night to do my response, it has already been pulled. So now I will be short a response, and didn't get the extra credit in. The course schedule overlaps Discussion 7 and 8, but it does not state that 7 ends a day early. I emailed the TA, but being that it's the weekend, I don't expect to get a response.
