am I wrong?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Here is a scenerio. Nurses aide was in the shower room and she is undressing the patient to give a shower. At the same time, her other patient who cannot do anything by herself says she have to go to the bathroom. So I went to a shower room and asked her if she can toilet this lady first before she gives her a shower and she refused and her reasoning is she is busy with another patient. My reasoning of asking her to toilet her first is because there is a toilet in the shower room and if this patient is not taken to the bathroom, then she is going to be incontinent. Since a patient who needs a shower is already in the shower room she can wait a minute or so until she toilet another patient. So am I wrong? I need an objective opinion beceause my manager is not being objective at all.

Why can't you do it?????????????

Sheesh. Your manager is SO CORRECT and YOU are WAY WRONG.

I think this post is a fake! Ms.RN just made up the story to see the reaction. I mean - REALLY- any body that have worked the bed side even one day would know not to leave a pt. unattended - not a patient who can not do anything for herself or somebody in the shower - this post is a fake - I hope, for all involved sake.:D

Having managed and been an adon, don in LTC this is really the mentality of the nurses! Very sad!

It is true of some nurses I work with also. These nurses to me, are a disgrace to our profession. Anyone to think it is beneath them to toilet a pt should have their license revoked!

As a UAP, I agree, SOME nurses (not all by a long shot!) do actually think like this!

I am sure you (OP) now understand that no one seems to agree with you. I also assume may never show up to this post again, but if so take this as a learning experience. As a nurse you are a provider of CARE, caring for the patients. If someone needs your help, help them. As a PP said assume for a moment that this was your mother, how would you feel when she explained this story to you. Would you march up to the nurse's station to complain? Time for a self check.

Yep, I'm with the others....why didn't you do it yourself?

Wow, this really screams "diva" to me.

I wouldn't want to work with a nurse like this and having been an ADON and an DON of a LTC facillity, I would not want a nurse who acted in this manner to work for me.

If this person didn't help toilet a patient, what else is she not doing?

You should have definately toileted the patient yourself!! People aren't like cans of soup you rearrange on your pantry shelf!

Am I missing something? Are your arms or legs broken? Did you have some dire situation that needed your absolute, immediate attention? Because that is the only reason why I could walk away from a patient who told me they needed to use the restroom.

I just started nursing school and one of the first things we learn is how to care for the basic needs of patients. Have you forgot how to ambulate a patient to the restroom? Are you too good to help them clean their perineal area?

Humble yourself. The CNA was totally in the right. There is no reason why you couldn't have helped out that patient, especially when you had the time and energy to track her down and order her to do it.

Were you even thinking of the other resident who was sitting in the shower half naked. Does his/her time, comfort, needs, safety, wants not matter?

I don't mean to be rude, but I am so glad that I never had to work with nurses like you when I was working as a CNA.

While I find myself generally agreeing with the concensus, including the speculation that there could be some trolling going on, I have to say there are two reasons I'll ask an aide to take a patient to the toilet: if the patient doesn't want a male to do it (maybe one in 50 or so times) or I'm busy doing something more urgent. Okay, wait, three reasons: if the aide isn't doing anything, I might pass the buck so I can chart. That isn't quite as rare as the patient who only wants a female, but it isn't very common, either. Usually we all have things to do.

Thing is, some of our best aides have told me they are happy when they're teamed with me. I feel pretty happy about that, although I'm not entirely sure why they feel that way. I ask a lot of them. On the other hand, there are others who roll their eyes any time I ask for help and are always "busy" even though nothing seems to be getting done.

So, while I tend to agree with most other posters, I did wonder as I read the OP, "Am I missing something?" And I didn't mean it in a sarcastic way.
