I want to be a CRNA so what!!!

I get so tired of people talking down to others for wanting to be a certified registered nurse anesthetist. I want to be one and I don't care who have a problem with it. Yes the money will be good, but it's also a dream of mines. There it is I said it. I do very well in school and I have the grades (well so far) to get into anesthesia school and I plan on doing it. Instead of discouraging me cheer for me please and I will do the same for you.

As I've often said before, if you have the ambition and self-discipline for it, go for it. The training's grueling, the level of responsibility and accountability far too terrifying for many nurses, but if you feel you can handle it, good for you.

I feel the same way and I plan on getting my CRNA as well. Don't let anyone tell you, you can't or discourage you....just prove them wrong because life is too short. Goodluck!

When I was in nursing school I had an elderly patient who WAS a CRNA. She asked me if I was going to be a CRNA and I said no, she said, "well Why not?." It had just never crossed my mind. lol

*** i never heard of anyone talking down to a want to be crna. seemsevery body and their dog wants to go to anestesia school. i would esitmate that about 1 out of 2 of the new grads that apply to my hospital's critical care nurse residency admit to wanting to go to anestesia school. half of the rest want to go as well but know better than to tell people about it.

very easy to understand. pay vs level of responsibiliety for critical care, er and similar skilled nurses is way out of wack leading to consider it. crna can make decent money and best of all can have all the automomy they desire.

i want to be one and i don't care who have a problem with it.

*** i seriously suggest you reconsider. there are certain people who's problem with it can result in you not going. there are some icu nurse managers out there who are very supportive about it. however there are a lot more who are not. in my experience the second group far out numbers the first. nurse managers hate spending vast sums of money traing a new icu nurse only to lose them to crna school just when they are actualy becomeing useful to the unit (1-3 years). i know and have known icu nurse managers who will absolutly not hire anyone they suspect of want to be a crna. these same manager may even refuse to write the required reference letter, or write one so bad you wouldn't want anyone to see it. my last manager used to alwasy ask applicants to our critical care nurse residency program "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" specificaly to attempt to weed out crna wannabes. i know of cases where nurse managers have done internet and social media searches of an applicant looking for clues that they want to to anestesia school. also calling up nursing school instructors and asking them if the applicant has ever expressed an interest in crna school.

there is a hospital not far from here and their icu nurse manager is so hostile she refuses to provide letters of reference for crna applicants from her unit. this has been a boon to the acute care manager of a smaller hospital close by. she lets if be known that if trained icu nurses want to come and work for her for 6 months or a year she will be happy to write a great reference letter to the anestesia school.

*** hey i wish you the best of luck ( not that you will need very much as getting in seems pretty strait forward and relitivly easy). i have a ton of friends who are crnas or are currently in anestesia school. they have very high job satisfaction.

Its a ten year goal of mine as well. It is either CRNA or med school. I believe people criticize when the first thing you mention pertaining to the profession is the monetary value as opposed to the job satisfaction itself. I love the thrill and critical thinking aspect of the profession. The flexibility of the schedule and the fact that one can actually have a life is equally tantalizing. Honestly speaking, I'm not too enamored with the pay because for what they do, many can get paid more. I also don't think there is anything wrong with talking about money as noone in healthcare is working for free.

I plan on being a CRNA as well. Good for you - you're in the game MAKING your life happen. So many people are WAITING for life to happen to them and your ambition just intimidates them. It makes them feel like they aren't doing enough in their own careers. But, that is their problem....not yours! Best of luck!
