Hey everyone so for the past year I have been contemplating traveling as a nurse. I still have two years left of college so I may change my mind, but right now I want to be a traveling nurse. I do no feel like I would have a problem moving around all the time...but my boyfriend is not thrilled. He will have another year of schooling than me so I was planning on being a travel nurse in that time. Is it possible to only do it for a year? Also what are the downfalls of this job that are not so obvious? I only know of the positives.

It is possible to do it for only 4 weeks. There are zero negatives. (unless it doesn't work for you)

Travel nursing right out of school will be extremely difficult to do...you are expected to know why to do with little to no orientation and as a new nurse tht would be very hard. Most contracts look for at least 2 years experience, some 3-5 years, and rarely 1 year experience.

Ah, thanks for that, I read too quickly. No, right out of school, you have no skills. You need at least a year of hospital experience before traveling. So that will fit right into your boyfriend's year before graduating. Then you still have the issue of the boyfriend who is a wuss. If he is on a career track, he won't be able to go traveling either. If he is a nurse, he too will need at least one year of a staff job, so two years for you in the same boring town. Like ordinary people who cannot be travelers.

My advice to you is to have a bit of savings before you travel. Own your craft, the hospitals you work for expect you to hit the ground running your first day. You only get 1 shift orientation and thats it. I love traveling because of the change of environment. I get to see the world and meet so many new people. Plus if its a ****** assignment i know i am only there for a few weeks. Good luck. If the boyfriend is a keeper he would let you do what you want. I was so depressed when i was a staff. Some people are just not meant to be in one place too long. I def one of them.

Whenever someone asks "is it worth it?", I want to reply "is it worth what?"

Anyway, you've got a few years before you'll be a canditate for travel nursing, so read all you can in the meantime and when the time comes, you'll know if it's right for you.

You will need at least a couple of years experience before you could do travel nursing. They won't hire a new grad.
