Hey guys, so i have this theory which makes sense to me. Please tell me i'm just crazy. So when you get more then 75 questions it means you are borderline and the computer doesn't know if you know your stuff enough. Right? Now say you're at 100 and you know the 100th question you got was correct for a fact. Now the computer shuts off, that should i only mean you passed right? Why else would they shut it off. So now lets say you got that wrong wouldn't it mean that you failed? Because if you got #99 right why would they give you an extra question and if you got that extra question wrong, turn it off. Makes no sense. It must mean that you got #99 wrong they gave you another question and since you got 100th wrong then they shut you off. Well for me i got up to 155ish and i got that question wrong and it shut off. Please tell me i'm over thinking this.
Thank you
That I understand. But that's with 265 questions. I'm taking about 155. Why not give me more if I got it wrong.
Yes, your exam stopped at 155. My we got off track! Sorry.
You didn't get one more question because you were far enough below the line to not be able to convince the computer that you COULD meet the minimum competency on that date, that's all. "Why not give you more if you got it wrong?" Because you were far enough below that giving you another one was pointless. It seems that you got enough wrong that you failed to demonstrate competency.
It doesn't give endless chances. It waits until it is 95% certain you are well above the pass line....or 95% certain you are well below it.
You got #155 wrong, and it was done. It was at the point at which it determined that you were too far below the standard of passing to pass in the end, so it stopped. Since you KNOW you got that question wrong...what is it you are not understanding about the process? Why do you think you should have gotten yet another question, when you were clearly below the passing line?
I re-read your first post in this thread, and I don't see anything at all "off": it simply gave you enough questions to know you just weren't up to snuff for that test....and ended.
I'm sorry if this sounds a little rough, I tend to be kinda blunt, but this is just how CAT works. But not being prepared to pass on one day doesn't mean you cannot pass another....good luck!

First, no that's not what continuing past 75 questions means at all. If you pass at 75 questions, you are well above the passing line and if you fail at 75 questions, you are well below the failing line. Everyone who gets more than 75 questions isn't borderline, they're just not so stellar in either direction that the computer can conclude whether or not they will pass yet.
And, no the last question doesn't determine if you passed or failed. You can get the 75th question wrong and still pass in 75 questions and you can get the 265th question right and fail. The last question is just that, the last question.
That's what saying. By me getting it wrong and it shutting it off it means I failed. It can't possibly mean that I passed right?
No, that's not true. You could have been far enough above the passing line that it shut off. Getting the last one wrong does not mean you failed. Getting 155 questions doesn't mean you failed.
Does your state participate in Quick Results? If so, I would definitely pay the $8 to find out :)
Thanks to Kel and Soprano; I had believed the OP said he HAD failed, and wondered why he didn't get more questions. Clearly was time for me to shut off the computer for the night! Thanks for recognizing what I had not.
OP....as has been said....either you did or did not demonstrate the competency requirement. There's really nothing more to work yourself over about. You passed or failed and at this point, the results are in and nothing changes them.
Pay the $8 if you can; if not, keep checking your State's BoN website to see updates on license postings.
Good luck.

It's not based on that particular question. It's based on the trend. So, as an example lets just say that the computer shut off after 100 questions because it didn't have enough information after 75 questions so It wanted 25 more. It would have shut off after 25 more questions regardless of whether you got the last question right or wrong.
I'm not saying this is what happened, I'm just trying to explain in a way you can understand. :-)
So i found out i failed my Nclex now. Do you guys have any suggestions on what I should do? I took kaplan already and didnt really think the tree helped me? The questions on the Qbank was so much easier then what i got on the test. Even though i got 55% most of the time, there were tons of questions where i can come down to an answer by reasoning. On the nclex i wasn't able to do any of that. Is there a certain program that I should take that will help? Any books? I have a lipincotts book but didnt really get to use it because the qbank and question trainer on kaplan took up most of my time. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
Sorry that you failed, but you need to re-evaluate the time that you spent studying. Did you study a month in advance, or did you wait until there was so little time that you just went through questions without reading the rationales? Read the rationales, it helps to understand what they are looking for on the test.
rafi, along with your mailed notice of failure you should be receiving a CPR (Candidate Performance Report). This paper will tell you how you did in each domain of testing, each area will be listed along with whether you were at, near, above/below the passing standard.
This report will be the foundation for formulating a new plan of study. Without knowing where you were failing, you cannot know what to do next. Sit tight, wait for that notice, and go from there.
Sorry about not passing . Check your cpr to see your weak areas. I highly recommend Hurst Review. Their online access is great with teaching you the core content. Watch every video lecture and memorize the worksheets that follow along with each lecture. That is what helped me passed. You are going to have to work hard at it because the nclex remembers what it tested you on. I have full confidence Hurst will help you as long as you do exactly as Aunt Marlene suggests and put in 100% of the effort
