Well, I made a promise to myself that I would post my experiences once I start LPN school so any potential student would know exactly "what it is like". Before I give you the run down of day 1 of my program, let me give you a little background on me and my program.
First, I'm 31, married, and the mother to four children ages 12, 8, 4, and 1. I'm taking a part time LPN program that alternates between 2-3 days a week for 22 months.
Well, I had class today from 8 to 2:30. The first hour or so we just went over the school handbook. We talked about absences, that you had to maintain an 80% to pass the course, uniforms, clinical experiences, etc. After that, we hit the books.
We are using the Foundations of Nursing book by Christensen. We covered chapter 1 today in class. Our teacher elaborated on the stuff she thought was really important about the history of nursing and just skimmed the stuff that wasn't that important. We started to work on chapter two (Legal Aspects in Nursing) and we watched a short video about patient rights. That took us until shortly after our lunch break.
From 1 to 2:30 we worked on medical terminology and important abbreviations we needed to know for nursing. At the end of class, we were told we would have a quiz just about every day. The quizes can be (on average), from 1 to 5 questions. So, I really have to study tonight.
Well, I have class both Tuesday and Wednesday as well this week. If I get a chance, I'll give all of you aspiring LPN students a run down as to what we did.
I hope this helps someone out there considering going to an LPN program. I know I always wanted to know "exactly what they did all day during an LPN program"!

I went to voc tech in new jersey to take the net and I failed. I did excellent on the math. But failed the reading by a couple of questions only. I was feeling really good about passing the test but failed any advice. I really want to do be a nurse working with kids. But sometimes I think I just going to fall back into the corporate world. Help!
Get the NET study guide. It's exactly like the test. You can get it at http://www.eriworld.com It costs around $30. You can also try ebay and Barnes and Noble, but those places tend to sell out quickly since it is in such demand.
Good luck,
Marci
Day 4 is now over.
This morning we went over chapter 3 on communication. That took us just about until lunch. After lunch, we got into groups and did role playing of the different types of nursing responses while our classmates had to guess which ones we were doing. This was to help "cement" them in our minds for our communication test next week.
We also started chapter 4, which is on the nursing process. After that we worked on conversions again (for example 1 teaspoon= 5 cc's etc.)
Then, it was time to pack up and go home. Doesn't seem like much, but it was 6 hours of class time.
We have our first test tomorrow. I'll let you know how that goes.

Thanks for the day-to-day play. You sound enthusiastic in your description of your day. Keep up the good work!
At orientation we were given a list of other items (non text book) we would be needing, i.e. stethoscope, pen light, name pin, etc. I read another thread rating stethoscopes and was wondering if anyone has purchased theirs yet and if so what brand and price range. The instructor gave no recommendation and their are many out there, any input would be appreciated.
Well, I got a 93% on my test today. That was a relief.
We took our test first thing in the morning. I think it took me about 45 mintues to complete. We were given 1 hour and 15 minutes to take it, so I had plenty of time. After it was over, we mostly stood out in the hall waiting for everyone to get done and the tests to get graded. We didn't get "down to work" again until almost 10 due to the test.
We covered the chapter on the Nursing Process today. We also watched two videos related to the nursing process as well. Then we just worked on conversions again until it was time to go.
Tomorrow is my last day this week, YEAH! You wouldn't believe how tired you get just sitting around listening and trying to absorb everything everyday. If there is one piece of advice I can give all of you students waiting to began the program, it would be to rest up. You won't believe how mind draining school can be.
Talk to you all later,
Marci
Alright, this is my last day this week.
I got a 100% on my quiz. Now, I have to study for the test next Tuesday.
We went over the chapter on documentation today. We also watched some videos on charting. Nothing to major.
We worked on our math skills and conversions again and our medical terminology. That was it!
If any of you have started your programs yet, please post your experiences with your program. I'm sure there are many other aspiring students that would love to read your experiences as well.
Take Care,
Marci
ok, so today was the first day. not so bad. the "senior" nursing class had made us breakfast, bacon, fruit, muffins, yogurt, croisants, and juice. we didn't do much of anything except all the students were asking questions. that went on from about 8-12 and then we got our assignment for the night. for homework, we have to do ch. 1 and 2 and do our workbook for those chapters....workbook total pages are 16 for those 2 chapters. we also got the info for our first test. we have about 100 prefixes we need to know for our test on jan. 22. we also have to do an oral presentation on a nursing current event that is due on feb. 7. i got home about 3 and and it is now 8:30 and i am still working on the chapters. i finished doing all my notecards for the prefixes. the first 2 chapters are so boring. it's on the history of nursing and about florence nightengale and clara barton. we were told not to read the book but just to glance over the info and do the problems in the workbook because there isn't time to read the book. we have class tomorrow and then friday thru monday are off due to teacher workdays or something and go back on tuesday and that's when our test is.
i am a little worried because i am still not finished doing all this work and i haven't even started studying. i plan on doing tons of that this weekend. i also have to work part time after school - haven't found a part time job yet - because it's just my husband and i and he doesn't make a whole lot working at disney. i hope i can do both!!
