Well, I made a promise to myself that I would post my experiences once I start LPN school so any potential student would know exactly "what it is like". Before I give you the run down of day 1 of my program, let me give you a little background on me and my program.
First, I'm 31, married, and the mother to four children ages 12, 8, 4, and 1. I'm taking a part time LPN program that alternates between 2-3 days a week for 22 months.
Well, I had class today from 8 to 2:30. The first hour or so we just went over the school handbook. We talked about absences, that you had to maintain an 80% to pass the course, uniforms, clinical experiences, etc. After that, we hit the books.
We are using the Foundations of Nursing book by Christensen. We covered chapter 1 today in class. Our teacher elaborated on the stuff she thought was really important about the history of nursing and just skimmed the stuff that wasn't that important. We started to work on chapter two (Legal Aspects in Nursing) and we watched a short video about patient rights. That took us until shortly after our lunch break.
From 1 to 2:30 we worked on medical terminology and important abbreviations we needed to know for nursing. At the end of class, we were told we would have a quiz just about every day. The quizes can be (on average), from 1 to 5 questions. So, I really have to study tonight.
Well, I have class both Tuesday and Wednesday as well this week. If I get a chance, I'll give all of you aspiring LPN students a run down as to what we did.
I hope this helps someone out there considering going to an LPN program. I know I always wanted to know "exactly what they did all day during an LPN program"!

Just finished 2nd day of LPN program orientation. Had a terrible headache and serious doubts at the end of day one. Today was a much better day. We were given our study schedule (material from 4 different text books) for the next 16 weeks, weekly vocab, 25 weekly abbreviations to memorize and various other handouts. Full time class does not begin until Jan. 28, so this will give me some time to become accustomed to the work load and develope a study schedule, I hope.
I am wondering if in time, the students will work together to better each other or is it dog eat dog/all about me and my personal success? I just didnt get the feeling anyone was all to interested in anything other than their own personal success. Hopefully I am wrong.:redpinkhe

Unfortunetly, I doubt it. Everyone is always going to be "looking out for number 1". I haven't see it yet in my program, but I know it will be coming.
I wish I could tell you it was going to get better, but I can't. Just hang in there.

My pn class is small( about 9 students 1 dropped because she missed the first day and we already covered the firt 4 ch. and the test was on wed.) But when i first got to class it was all about who can answer the most questions, ppl were literally fighting to say something..lmao, but now everyone is pretty friendly...we do help each other out...so maybe we wont tear each other apart since our class is so intimate....maybe lol

OMG, missing the first day of nursing school! Doesn't look really good for her to be a nurse anyway! And only 10 students to start anyway! I'm starting classes in April and our class size will be about 75 to start. WOW! :omy:
Put one foot in front of the other, keep up with your studies, don't let anything you don't understand get by without clarification, and before you know it you will have graduated and be licensed. LPN school was the hardest year of my life. I never thought it would end and now I'm getting ready to renew my LPN license. You can get through!
you go girl this is going to change your life for the very best marci this truly is your moment to shine. and you are going to suceed because like you i also had my very onw cheerleading squd behind me 100% and use your family for your reason for being there. if you can see it you can be it! and dont stop there keep it moving . im also cheering for you for i was once you . and i made it through and its a beautiful thing to be able to acheive a goal.

I don't get the competition vibe from girls and the one guy in my class. HOWEVER, yesterday I did have serious moment of doubt just like you. It was probably due to being up for nineteen hours the day before
Thank you so much for the play by play. I have always wondered what it would be like. I will apply for a part time LVN program here in Riverside where I live. Sounds like the books are the same as I look through them everytime I visit the book store. I am drawn to the nursing books. I just cant help myself! I was also nice to know your situation. I am a few years older than you with 2 children. I have been going over in my mind how I will do it with them in school, out of school. You know what I mean cause you have kids. They are always on your mind. Anyway, the day by day stuff does help and I will be looking forward to your next post. Thanks again, Mel
Hi Everyone,
All of these posts are wonderful. I'll be starting my first "real" LPN class in February. Being an older student (41) I admire all of you who are starting school at such a young age. I'll try to add to this thread along my journey as well. One really neat thing my program has done is to start a bulletin board similar to this one exclusively for our class. So we are acutally meeting each other online even before day one of class. Best of luck to all of you.

If I can answer any questions, feel free to ask. You can either post them here or PM me. If it is Monday thru Wednesday, you might have to wait until later in the week for a response (school). However, I promise to get back to you.
I'm glad this posting is helping you all. I know I was always searching this board for something like this. I really just wanted to know what nursing students do in class all day.
I think I start Lab in two weeks. I let you know what we do in there. I start clinicals in March.
Thanks,
Marci
