I have been a nurse for 3 years, 25 yo, no kids, no life (all I did was sleep and work). My background is rehab, med-surg, and travel nursing. This year I was working on a med-surg unit. I had too many patients, family members was bugging me, post ops coming left and right, CNA's no where to be found and the new schedule came out and I was working 3 week-end out of the month. I went home and thought about my life and decided this is not what I want in my life. Now I have had bad days before and this was not my worse day in nursing. I think I finally had it. I was tired of talking to the scheduler and manger about these hours. After careful consideration, the next week I gave my 3 week notice. I'm currently doing agency to make my ends meet.
My question is that I don't know what to do with this BSN degree. I have gotten use to my financial security from nursing. I don't want to deal with bedside nursing. I don't feel safe going into people's houses. I don't want to have some scheduler controlling my life. I thought about going for nursing informaic (spelling error) since I love computers or going for computers all together and starting my own business. I don't know what to do and I'm kind of scared of the unknown. I'm sorry if I'm rambling.
I want to thank everybody that responded for your support. I had a question for Menetopali. What do all the initials mean? I fiqured they ment the military or something like that.
have you considered PACU? I have found great satification in that department. Most units you work M-F usually 7-3 or so, but there is the issue of taking call. I was only on call one night during the week and every third weekend, not so bad, plus call pay was good and if you did get called out it was time and half. Another option is a specialty hospital, I worked at a small surgical center in the PACU, m-f 6:30 to 3. No weekends, paid off holidays, (surgeons dont want to work holidays) plus no call since it was a surgical hospital!! Food for thought! Dont be discouraged, you went into nursing for a reason, you just need to find your niche!!

((((((((((((((Nicmac4))))))))))))) :icon_hug: Just had to give you a big warm caring hug for all you are feeling now. I have pretty much been feeling like you describe about doing bedside nursing. I was "forced" through circumstances in my personal life to take a sabbatical. During this time off work, I have come to accept many wonderful things about myself as well as the not so wonderful things about myself. In the process of growing up in my faith and emotional journey, I have come to realize nursing may no longer be where I am to expend my energy, but in doing something totally different. It's amazing how "time off" from doing bedside nursing has brought me to a point in my life that says "take time for me and begin to do what has my name all over it". I'm broke financially.........but happy spiritually and emotionally for the first time in my life. I had to be willing to go deep within myself regardless of the creditors screaming at me, and others pulling for my attention, in order to find "me".............now I am happy to know "me" in a way I've never known myself, and now I can look for that job that has my name all over it. I wish the same for you. Do NOT be afraid to stay real with yourself, and do not be afraid to grow more in other avenues that express who you are. Listen to your heart, your faith, your gut, your innerself..........and you just be you. My prayers are with you as you continue to do this soul searching for yourself. NOT being a nurse isn't the worse thing that could happen to you. But, selling yourself short in life can be. :kiss

I don't blame you - I am now going on 30 years in nursing, I work in Cath Lab and its the only kind of nursing I could stick with. (Tried peds, ccu, icu, open heart, ob/gyn) Keep looking around. If you don't like people (and right now you probably don't), and are able to go to school, do it. Maybe you would like hospice nursing - some of the most caring and skilled nurses work there. Try Pacu, Heart Surgery - super specialties, where as soon as the patient wakes up - they're "OUTTA THERE" Cath Lab is exciting, but has call (it seems the best jobs have call). Go to a smaller hospital in a small town and work and go to school...many nurses have very successful careers and life after nursing!

are their any LPN programs in your area? with a BSN you could probably teach. you may be able to be a clinical instuctor for an ADN program as well. Also you could start your own CNA training and CPR cert business and make BANK. I know a nurse doing it in our area and she charges 650 per person and has a class load of about 40-60 monthly. CHA CHING! Also I agree with the school nursing idea and community nursing. Also insurance companies or management nursing could be for you. You definitely have experience. how about case management? The great thing about a nursing degree is supposed to be the flexibility. Good luck in your decisions. You are sure to find something.
Maybe what you need is a different setting. Try a different hospital or different dept (OB, Maternity, Dr.'s office). Always take time out for yourself. If Nurses burn themselves, they really are no good for themselves or the patient. I am not a nurse yet but i am in nursing school. i am 23 soon to be 24, married, and have 2 children. Trust me when i say my life is very busy. I have little time to myself but i find time some how. you only have you. Make the best of it. What about a movie here or there, church, etc. Maybe go back to school? Nurses are so important and they are really admired by many. you help so many people from day to day and dont even notice it. If you are really tired of working with the patient then maybe try working at an insurance company. you worked too hard in school to just let it go. Hopefully this gave you a little relief.

Thank to everyone. Especially cheerfuldoer. I thank everyone for all of their ideas and support.
Some people have been mentioning case mangement. Currently I have been taking the Kaplan course for about 3 months now. I applied all over for CM jobs and had one interview. Most jobs want 5 years experience I don't think the course is a waste though. It has taught me a lot about talking with patients (Something I never had time to do).
There are so many options out there. I thought about all of them. I have been working agengy jobs. It is okay. I get my work done and don't have to worry about the facility too much. But that is only when I need money. I also have been working with my finance (spelling error) with his computer business. We are taking about me joining him and starting a private contractor busniess. I am good with computers, but I will need to get my certification in IT because some stuff is foreign to me. I also want to take some busniess courses.
I know that God has a plan for me and I am enjoying this time to quiet my mind and listen. Again I want to thank everybody.

USPHS is the united states public health service. while they are a uniformed service they are not an 'armed service' and they provide direct health care to a number of agencies and populations. here in arizona they staff the indian hospitals and the outpatient clinics on reservations, provide healthcare to detained immigrants, and serve in public health. in other areas the USPHS works in research, health marketing, and disaster relief. the USCG is the united states coast guard (an armed service under the department of homeland security) and NOAA is the national oceanic and atmospheric administration (a uniformed service, but not an armed service). both of these agencies maintain sea going vessels and draw their healthcare staffing from USPHS. the most recognizable member of the USPHS is the sugeon general.
the other services (army, navy, air force) are all armed services and have been recruiting heavily for nurses so i gave only a brief nod to them in my earlier post.
in adition to the USPHS you can look into state and county public health jobs and other 'non-traditional' nursing fields like college /school health.
hope this helps a little (btw USPHS web site: http://www.usphs.gov )
Have you considered the legal side of nursing? Get certified and use your experience and start your own business.
Hi,
How do you get certified in legal nursing? I am a new graduate nurse and I would love to know all the aspects of legal nursing. I still plan on working at the bedside but I would also like to have a business that inludes nursing on the side. Any suggestions are welcomed.

What about FULL- time agency? I have worked full time as an agency/traveler for 2 years now. I have ins. through my husband but most larger agencies do offer it of you work full time. That way you can set your own schedule based on your needs. Grnated you may have to be a little less picky based on available shifts.
I was completely burned out on my last job but making that change has made me enjoy being a nurse again. No politics, no popularty contests, just go to work and go home.
