I was picked in the lottery!!!

U.S.A. California

O M G, I am soooo happy right now! Out of 585 applications, my name came up in the first 100, which means I should get into Spring 2014 at CCSF (they pick 50 for fall; 50 for spring). Nothing's set in stone until I get the official letter, but I'm still going to celebrate!!!

Hello everyone... :-((( I am completely depressed today, as I've read (once again) my CCSF Lottery results for 2013/2014... This is my second year of applying to this program! This year, I am # 223... Last year I was # 280..something... This is just plain outrages - I've graduated from CCSF with the Highest Honors in 2011, completed all of my pre-req's and co-req's (all of them!) with an A and still - I just can't get in!!!...:-((((( I am a single mom, my son is 7 years old and it is just so devastating to me, not to be able to get into this program, once again... I've separated from my ex last year, I am a Domestic Violence Survivor and I am struggling to find a job, went through 7 month of Disability last year (due to dislocated shoulder, Humerus Tuberosity got chipped off so I had to have a surgery and etc.), receiving Government help... All my hopes were, to get into the program this year or at least for the Spring 2014... Nothing... If the competition is so strong, CCSF should change the acceptable GPA!!! How can you take someone who got all C's (2.5 GPA - 18 years old, living with parents and not even sure if the Nursing degree will be the right fit for them!) and not to accept a straight A student, who is truly feeling that this is an only career she/he wants to achieve in life???!!! Both of my parents are Doctors (another country, so no $$$$ help from them whatsoever), I've lived here since I was 16 years old, more then half of my life! I am so sad and devastated, of not being accepted into this year's 100 lucky lottery winners... Whoever got in this year - good luck and a sincere congratulation!... I have nothing else to say though... this is just unfair... If you go to the Hospital with an Emergency- would you rather be seen and evaluated/given shots/take vital signs by someone who's barely got C's in Physio/Micro/Anatomy/Psychology/Speech/Math/Statistics and etc...??? I would rather have a Nurse who had A's for these Nursing Requirements!!!... CCSF MUST CHANGE THEIR ACCEPTANCE RULES FOR THE FUTURE RN'S!!! THEIR LOTTERY IS AWFUL, UNFAIR AND OUTRAGEOUS!!!... :-(((((( Yes, I am sad and angry at this point and I am looking forward to start some sort of a Petition, in order to raise the acceptable GPA for the RN Program at CCSF!

I am so sorry for you :/ I don't see the point of lotteries. Any way, is there any way you could go to school out of state?

I'm sorry you were not picked for the lottery. But to answer your question, when I'm a patient I like a nurse who's caring, who shows interest for my well being, who answers my questions, who is understanding of my condition, who takes her time in the craziness of her shift to be a good patient advocate. If she had a 2.5 or a 4.0 is not really a big deal. Nursing is not only book smarts, it's beyond that.

I'll take the nurse who did well in school. You can have the others. :)

I go to school with a couple wonderful, caring people who I generally like. I hope I never wake up and see them standing over my bedside.

Of course that's not based solely on GPA...more like intelligence/common sense in general.

Sorry about your situation. Can you move? I'd suggest that if so. They were doing this in the Phoenix area up until recently but have changed many of the schools. It's frustrating for sure but it's the reality and requires a creative solution. Mine is moving.

Congrats to the OP for getting called on first try!!

Very good news. Congratulations on the acceptance to CCSF Nursing.

You know, the lottery may seem unfair to people who don't get in, but it gives people who aren't academically strong a fighting chance to 'chase their dream' (no pun intended to OP) and do what they feel they were made to do. Any one of us may have a 4.0 GPA that scored 90th percentile on the TEAS V but may be socially inept - maybe even (god forbid) mentally ill. I'm just saying that the lottery system was decided by choice for northern California schools because they understand that, in 'nursing' one needs not only to be competent enough to process important protocols and make wise decisions, but also to be compassionate, empathetic, and just understand how to be a human being and all the like, to do the job. If individuals are really passionate about becoming an RN, then they'll do what it takes to get in - even if it means waiting another year.

To Katrina Mahl:

I'm so sorry for all you have been through. Understandably you are angry for many reasons. Honestly, if I could give my spot to a specific person, I would gladly give it to you. I, too, have lived through similar situations, and I can tell you that things will work out for you in the right time. That's little consolation right now, but I believe this to be true. What other schools have you applied to? I was planning on applying to all ADN programs in the Bay Area until I got into one. There are many, and if you want a merit-based program, apply to the BSN programs.

I wish you the best going forward, and one day this struggle will be a very distant memory.

I'm excited for you congrats. I just got my acceptance letter today for fall of 2014 :)

Congratulations! :-)

Congrats to the OP for getting called on first try!!
