Hi everybody,
GUESS WHAT? I PASSED!!!!!
I am a foreign educated nurse and I've cleared CGFNS earlier with a score of 536( pass score is 400).I took my NCLEX-Rn exam on July 31'st and I got the quick results today. I finished my NCLEX-RN exam with 75 questions. I was sure that I'll pass and was eager to post this thread.
Here I give some tips and method to prepare for the exam. I think this is a very effective method which will surely bring success. Please try this and I hope this thread will be useful to all of you who are preparing for the exam.
1)TIME REQUIRED FOR PREPARATION:
Full time:2 months
Part time:3 to 4 months
2)BOOKS REQUIRED:
a)Saunder's Comprehensive review for NCLEX-RN
b) Lippincott's Review for NCLEX-RN
c) R.A.GAPUZ's ABC's of passing foreign Nursing exams
3)METHOD OF STUDY:
a) First study the content of a particular chapter in Saunder's( for eg-endocrine system). Do the questions behind that particular chapter in Saunder's. Watch out for the test taking strategies mentioned at the end of each question. Saunder's review book is relatively easier than other books- so make sure you get 80% of the questions right at the end of the chapter.( You can use either the book or the accompanying CD)
b) Next go to the same topic in Lippincott(eg-Endocrine system) and do the questions as a self evaluation test. These questions are harder- so make sure you get atleast 70%
c) Likewise keep completing all the chapters in both books at a time. This makes you a master in answering both easy and difficult questions.
d) At the end when you have only 1 to 2 weeks for the exam take R.A.Gapuz's book and read through the book 2 times. All the important information will be given in this book in a nut shell.
e) ADDITIONAL STEP:
When you have finished all this do a comprehensive test with Kaplan CD( one test is enough). The mark you get here will surely tell you if you will pass the NCLEX or not.(Make sure you get around 65-70% or above)
I hope this information was useful.
I want to share a quote to all of you.

Hi Hema,
Heartly congratulations to you:balloons:. You have done really a great job.
I have taken my nclex-rn exam on Aug 02 2007,it took me very far upto 220 QUESTIONS then i ran out of time.I'm really worried about my results. Mine is CA BON & I haven't got my results yet. I already got the dates for IELTS & CGFNS on september.
Could you please tell me where can i buy R.A.GAPUZ's ABC's of passing foreign Nursing exams book??? I searched thr' internet but i couldn't find it(including Amazon).
What's the total time & Questions for CGFNS? Because my friends sent have to take 400/560+. But when i look at CGFNS website it shows 260 Q ( 150+110). Which one is current & correct? (OR)
Is that total 260 Qs f calculated as 560+ marks & we have to take 400marks out of 560+ (80%)???? Am i correct?
How much is the passing score?
Which book is best for IELTS? Sorry have you taken IELTS. If so, please answer this question. Otherwise please ignore it.
Awaiting for your reply.
Thanks Hema.

Hi Lily,
Thanks for the message! I hope and pray that you clear the Nclex-RN exam. My best wishes for you.
I would like to clarify your doubts.
1) I took my Nclex-RN from New mexico board of nursing.
2) You can get R.A.Gapuz's ABC's of passing foreign Nursing exams in the following website:http://www.ragapuzreview.com/publication.php ( go to the second page in publications and you'll find a yellow book).
3) As you mentioned the total number of questions for CGFNS is 260(150+110). There will be two sessions-one in the morning and one in the afternoon. THE total score is 800. Pass score is 400. You'll have approximately few seconds less than a minute to answer each question.(Make sure u keep up with your time).
4) I did clear IELTS with an overall band of 7.5.
The requirement is that you get an overall band of 6.5 but a mandatory band of 7 in speaking.
5) You can use Cambridge's books for IELTS. I found it very useful. If you are not a native speaker of english please watch english news channels and try to listen carefully. This will be very useful for the listening part of the exam.
6) Additional info:
IELTS is conducted by the British council and have four aspects of testing- Listening, Reading, Writingand Speaking.
Please let me know if you want any other info. I'll let you know as far as I know.
All the best!
Hope for the best!

Hi Hema
Thanks a lot for u'r tips....I appreciate u'r taking time to do that. I'm studying frm Saunders and Kaplan books and online material for the big day. Do you thk if i concentrate on saunders completely for content review it will be enough.....how many q's did u got? n how much time did u took.....did anything in particular helped u while u were reviewi g the content......how long did it took to finish saunders?......just curious to know.....congratulations once again n have a great nursing career ahead......R u from India by any chance....:)
Hi lily,
Thanks for the message!
I completed the exam with 75 questions and I took 1 hour and 40 minutes.
I strongly feel that Saunder's comprehensive review is the best book for review of content. If you are thorough with saunders(front cover to back cover including the test taking strategies)- you r damn sure to pass. But it is very difficult to remember everything especially pharmacology. So I used to a lot of memory tips/mnemonics to remember facts.
For eg,
The adverse effects of Anti psychotics can be remembered using this: SHANCE
S-SUNLIGHT SENSITIVITY( Use hats and sunscreen)
H-HEPATOTOXICITY( Monitor LFT)
A-AGRANULOCYTOSIS( Characterised by fever and sore throat)
N-NEUROLEPTIC MALIGNANT SYNDROME( Characterised by fever and muscular rigidity)
C-CIRCULATORY PROBLEMS( Leukopenia and orthostatic hypotension)
E-EXTRA PYRAMIDAL SYMPTOMS( Administer anticholinergics and anti parkinsonian agents)
You can finish reading Saunders even in a month. But the important point is how far you are able to use the elimination techniques and how efficiently you make intelligent guesses.. I stress this because not all questions in NCLEX are from what you learnt. For this you must do as much practice questions as possible. That is y I've mentioned in the thread that you'll need atleast 2 months time( full time) preparation say 10 hours of study/day.
Sincere and dedicated preparation is necessary. Please remember- Nothing great is achieved without hard work. Sincere effort always pays in the case of NCLEX-RN.
Yes I do come from India.
