I need motivation!!!!! Inspire me please!!!!

Published

Hello. I am technically a junior in college but I am just recently a nursing major so I am pretty much starting over, taking freshmen level prerequisites. I am going for my BSN. When I first started college, I had planned on graduating spring of 2011, but NOW I am going to graduate (if all goes to plan and I get into the nursing program when I want) spring of 2013. Needless to say I am frustrated and lacking in motivation because I feel that my degree will never be accomplished and graduation is soooooooo far away. I'm 21 years old and when I graduate I will be 24. I realize that some of you are laughing at my whining because plenty of students start college at a much older age than 24, but STILL. :) Don't laugh.....seriously.....I can still hear some of you.

Tell me it's worth it. Tell me that nursing is rewarding and the salary and job security is just amazing. Please, pretty please. I need a boost. Somebody cheer me up. :)

I am not much of a reference to say "it's worth it!" because I'm a terrified first semester nursing program student who begins my first classes on Tuesday. I can only go by what people have said in that it is rewarding. You will have job security for life, which honestly in this hard time, is encouraging in itself. I'm 23 (and have been working towards acceptance into the nursing program and doing pre-reqs basically since graduating high school almost 5 years ago) and will graduate when I'm 25. At first, I was disappointed because that just seems so old but then the more I thought about it, the older you are the more experience you have. Being a nurse at 21 (when I originally thought I'd become one) would have been waaaay too young. Things work out.

But all of the technical benefits aside, you have to want to do it. You have to have the passion to do this. It can't be just a replacement just to have a job. If you want it, you'll get it. People tell me all of the time these next 2 years are going to fly by. I am not starting out getting my RN-BSN. I am just going for my ADN and maybe eventually will get the BSN. We'll see how this goes first. ;)

I wish you luck! The pre-req classes are indeed difficult but if I can do it, anyone can. :)

Im 26.... started school with one major... had to change to another... my dad got very ill. Took 5 years to graduate with my BS in psychology(2007). Now I'm Back finished my Pre requisites took 1&1/2 years to get into nursing school and I start nursing 1 next week. I wanted a plan, I wanted to be done but life is a winding road. After a certain point your realize everything will be ok and you just go with it. Keep motivated one day at a time! It is always worth it! It's your life!!

I appreciate a fellow student's perspective. Thank you. I DO want it and I know I will be good at it, but it's so far away that at times (most of the time actually) it's almost impossible to actually see myself doing it. I don't know if I will ever get there.

You can do it and it will be well worth it when you finish. I am 33 years old and i will be graduating in may with my msn. I started the adn program in 1995 graduated in 2001. Continued persuing my bsn graduated in 2005. Continued on and now i can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I've been in school for 14 years and i've wanted to give up so many times. I will tell you nursing school is challenging and at times you will feel like giving up, but you have to keep pushing. Take it one day at a time. Allnurses is a wonderful website to find encouragement and advice.

Hi superaunt!

Time will go by much faster than you think. Thinking about the years it takes is depressing. I'm 27 and catch myself thinking of how loooong it will take to finish school, find a job, gain experience, plus however many years it will take to really start feeling like I won't kill anyone that day..... and so on and so on, endlessly.

But someone here (I wish I could remember who) responded to a similar post with something like this..."You can either be 24 years old.... or 24 years old and an RN". I think I might have butchered the paraphrasing there.

That thought plus occasional vents to other students/nurses really helps me stay focused.

I'm 47 and in nursing school. I tell all the younger ones they are so lucky to do this at this point - they will be set for life. They will have a respectible career in place at a young age and will not have to live through poverty or raise their children in poverty. They will have independence and so will be able to pick and choose a good man - not just take whoever will support them. You are shaping your mind and thinking process in a way that will serve you in every area for the rest of your life. There are so many benefits to doing this now I can't list them all.

When you are my age a year goes by like nothing. I know at your age a year is an eternity. But as you go on with your life you will look back and think, "I was so smart - I invested a few years of my life in school in exchange for a career that can last 40 years!

A lot of people your age waste their early 20s partying and having a good time. That gets you nothing in the future.

Yes, it will definitely be worth it.

I didn't read the other posts but I just wanted to say I know exactly how you feel. I am also a junior in school but I am just starting in the nursing program this march. I know how frustrated you are because I have been there to but just keep your head up and keep thinking positive. Yes, you may be in college longer and you will be older when you graduate but so what. If this is what you really want to do than just think of it as the wait only making you a more dedicated student to accomplish your dreams. So just remember just because it takes you longer to get there doesn't mean you should be down on yourself, I was and it got me nowhere. So it is worth it but don't let the voices in your head get to you. Hope this helps you relax some.
