I've seen on threads where students record their lectures. I want to try that when I start school in January. My situation is different this time and I'll have to work as a phlebotomist at night and attend classes around noon after my sister finishes hers so I won't have as much time to study as Im used to. Does anybody have a digital audio/voice recorder they recommend? I'm asking my boyfriend for Christmas and since money is tight due to our four month old I want to get recommendations before I ask for a certain 1. Hes a male so he won't know what to get . Thanks in advance.:Evil-Pumpkin:

Most smart phones have voice recorder apps, but my prof wouldn't allow us to use our cellphones because she had students abuse the privilege. I bought this one

Amazon.com: Olympus VN-722PC Voice Recorders, 4 GB Built-In-Memory: Electronics

I like that I could upload the recordings on my computer to have or email to students who missed a lecture..

Thanks. I have an app on my phone but I get so many emails and txt messages I'm nervous it wouldn't catch everything when I had notifications. Did you ever have that problem?

My friend has a Sony one, not sure of the model. I will find out and respond again on Monday. It records nice an clear and you can transfer the files to a computer, uses 2 AAA batteries for one semester, etc.

I have an RCA model VR5235-B and it is horrible. Even 3 feet away from the instructor the recording are quiet and muffled, it uses batteries every month. Stay away from this one.

I used an app on my phone but noticed that it kept the screen on, so it would drain my battery. By the time lecture was over my phone was at 30ish %. If I put my phone to "sleep" so the screen was out, it would stop recording.

I bought a sony recorder from amazon years ago that held up extremely well (I used it for 2-3 years). I think I spent about $40 on it and it was a great investment. I had classmates comment on the quality of sound, even when I sat at the back of the room (they were used to recordings on phones that weren't as good). I replaced the batteries maybe 2 (3 at the most) times in one year and this was with use of about 12-16 hours per week on average, sometimes up to 22 hours per week.

I'm not sure if this is the exact model, but it looks like it Amazon.com: SONY ICD PX333 Digital Voice Recorder: Office Products

If you do record something I liked to do was keep the recorder next to me. If I missed something I would write down the time of the recording (like 22 minutes) in my notes so I could go back and re-listen to just the small section I needed and not waste time. I also broke the recordings up in hour increments (would just stop the recording and start a new one during lecture) because that made it easier to upload the recordings onto Google drive to access later or email to classmates (if the files are too large they won't upload). I also wrapped a rubber band around the recorder to keep it from sliding off slanted desks.

Good luck!

edit: it was super easy to upload the files to my computer with the USB cord that came with the recorder. I also had classmates who used their phones to record and sometimes the phone would act up and stop recording in the middle of lecture (and they didn't always realize this). They were always super glad I had my recorder and could email them my recording when that happened. The recorder also came with software and I was able to burn the recordings onto a CD which made it easy to listen to reviews and such in my car when commuting at exam time.

In the past, for prereqs, I used my laptop camera/recorder. It recorded my face while taking notes (bleh!) as well as the instructors voice.

BTW: I rarely end up listening to the lecture again, so it's not imperative for me to record lecture.

Instead I take tons of notes. But I'm an old school learner.

I have an app on my phone but I put my phone on silent. When it vibrates I can hear it in the recording

That sucks. Thanks for finding out for me and warning me. It would be my luck my boyfriend would buy something that either didn't work or only picked up farts or something :D

That's what I was worried about.

Lol. I didn't think about my laptop. I learn things by writing but I don't write fast enough to catch everything. Plus I wanna do this so when I work I can listen on breaks or in the car, etc. This is the 1st time I'll be going to school as a mom and working full time. Before I only worked weekends during school.

Thats funny for some reason. When it vibrates can you still hear the teacher? I'm guessing not.
