I need help: a nurse not prepared for the job

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I need help, I just graduated my bachelor's degree in nursing and I'm preparing myself for the examination. My problem is that - I can't take care of the sick. As I read my books and understand nursing and understand myself, I look back to where the situations stated in those books similar to mine. I have this psychological problem of seeing sick people, I hate sickness and agonies. I can't tolerate to see people lying on their beds and nearly dying. As I have experienced in my family, everytime there was a sick member in the house, I leave the house until that person got well. I don't want to see my mom sick, my brother and everybody...

What shall I do...?

thanks

Maybe this is the anxiety talking as you prepare for the NCLEX? I can't think of any other reason why after a BSN program of study you'd second guess yourself now. I think taking the career advice others have given so far may be good for you.

okay,...I'll play,...to the OP,..you should make other arrangements,...go back to school,...anyone that would spend 4 yrs of their life learning to care for "sick" people, when they don't even like sick people and can't stand to be around them isn't smart enough to be a nurse. Find a career where your decision making won't affect peoples lives!

There are so many specialty areas that you can investigate besides hospital staff nursing. Of course, the experience is very helpful to solidify your skills. You could work in an office, OR, or L&D--that would minimize the distress you feel when seeing an acutely ill individual. I would have difficulty seeing a loved one hurting. I view this as an chance to comfort and help them through their illness. There is place for you in the nursing world--you just need to find which setting is a good fit for you.

Have you thought about nursing education? This would require a masters in ed, but as we are well aware there is a huge demand for nursing professors.

I know!! You and me both! I wasn't paying a lot of attention earlier when I read the OP after starting this thread. I can't believe I didn't put 2 and 2 together - I feel more than a little ignorant!
