hello there. i'm not an lpn as of yet, but i will be in 2008 permitting if i pass the test. i'm not really good in math and i have disliked it all my life. as you know, nurses need a lot of math in order to do doseage calculations, ht. and wt., surface area, drug doseages for peds, monitoring iv, giving im, sq, or id injection etc...i hope math won't be my downfall as a nurse because i really love nursing! does anybody have any suggestions about an easier way to do mental math for drug calculations??? any help will be appreciated. thank you so much. :):):)

thank you soo much Missy. Actually, it's the LPN program that I am in... yes, it would be sooo cool if you get into the LVN program in 2008 becuase it would be so nice if we could study together! Then we could offer advice, reassure, and support each other. :) When will you find out if you got in? Will the CC call you? Well, missy do take care and I wish you and your family a very Happy New Year and I'll ttul. Keep me posted. :):):nurse:

Thanks!!! I will definitley need a lot of support to get through nursing school, I am really hard on myself sometimes and it would be nice if I could talk to someone who also going to nursing school and would understand better. My CC said they would mail out acceptence letters in May!!! So I will be keeping my fingers crossed!!! Plus it's my Birthday in May, so it would be a nice birthday present if I got an acceptence letter:welcome::welcome::welcome:!!! I hope that you and your family have a HAPPY NEW YEAR as well:smiley_aa:smiley_aa:smiley_aa!!! Keep me posted ok!!!

hello there, Missy. Yes, it does feel great to talk to someone who is going through what you're going through. Let's face it, nobody understands what us wannabnurses are really going through! They don't understand the amt of time and stress and dedication it takes to pull through. Futhermore, they don't understand that it's not all about the grades, but what you know as well. So you said that u'll have find in May as when u get accepted in the LVN program? That's awsome!!! I really hope u get in and let me know as soon as u do.And yes, it would be an awsome birthday present if if got in. :):):):nurse:

Thanks!!! I will definitley let you know as soon as I find out-wish me luck:up::up::up:!!! You are so right, nobody else but us wannabnurses knows what is like-all the studying, dedication, and the stress we have to go through in order to absorb all the information that we have to learn in a short period of time!!! My friend told me that one of her friends is in the LLVN program right now and there is tons of reading and tests every week. And with all the information you have given me will help me to develope better study skills and hopefully help me get through nursing school. Thanks so much again for all of your support and keep me posted ok!!!

you'e welcome Missy. And thank u for all your support as well.:typing I really appreciate it. I just wanted to wish you a Happy, Safe, and productive New Year! Yes, nursing is pretty stressful but if we put our minds to it, we can make it. What your friend's friend said about the LPV program is true. In my school the LPN's (well, when I go there for the 6 months after I graduate in june.) have a test about every week on three chapters. That may not seem like a lot, but in nursing, that's all lot of material to memorize! Also, in the LPN program, they have one huge test called ATI, every month and if you don't pass it they kick u out of the program. I know this becuuse one of my friends who graduated last year, got kicked out of the program. I felt so sory for him. Well, Missy, enjoy your day and keep me posted! :):):):nurse:

Well your very welcome!!! That is what scares mean besides math, is all of the reading & memorizing I will have to do:chair:!!! How do you retain all that information? If you have any tips or advice on that I would greatly appreciate it. Besides reading the material, how do you make the information stick in your mind? Sometimes for me it's reading it over & over a few times or I know I am not suppose to do this but I will wait until the night before a big test to really study good & sometimes it works but with nursing school that may be a really dumb thing to do and would probably make me fail. So if you have any advice on that I would be very greatful. It's so embrassing to admit but my study habits are not the best and this is the first time I have had to really study hard since I was in college the first time about 10 years ago!!! back then I was just out of high school and really did not know what I wanted to do-what I wanted to major in, it has taken me a awhile to realize at I really wanted to be and the courage to go for it. I hope that you and your family also have a Safe and Productive New Year!!! sorry about the long post:smilecoffeecup:Keep me posted ok!!!

no calculators for the big license exam...wish me luck. i write the canadian exam here in 8 days!

no need to apologize. It's okay your post was not long. Well, luckily I've been blessed with the ability to memorize things very quickly. Plus, if it's nursing I have to memorize, all the better. I'll b more focused and more interested. It's okay if you're not a good memorizer. I would definetly NOT reccommend that your "CRASH STUDY" right before a test. It's not a good idea especially with nursing. What I usually do to retain information is I read the material a couple a times. First, I read once through just trying just to read everything. Then I read it again. This time focusing more on the information I did not fully understand. If I have to read two chapters, I take notes and then study them. It all depends on what you want to learn. Another really good tip I reccommend is to parphrase as you read. Just read a paragraph or a couple of lines and simplify it into terms you will understand (yay, nursing jargon will work). Another important tip is to re-read the chapter after a test. On the weekends, read the chapter again so the brain has a chance to retain the information. This way, you won't forget the imformation and you're not just studying for the "nursing test." Maybe, by this time you will start to retain and comprehend some imformation that you did not know before. Well, I hope this helps. And please don't be embrassed; everyone has a flaws. The important thing is that you r aware of it and you are willing to change! Well, sorry for the long post. I hope this helps. I'll ttyl. keep me posted.:):):):nurse:

I wish you good luck and I hope you pass your NCLEX-PN. Just remember to study those meds, peds, Maslow's heriarchy of needs and "select all that apply" questions. I heard that those questions were on the NCLEX. Good luck.. :studyowl::):):):nurse:

you're welcome Missy. It's no problem. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. All of the study tips that I mentioned I follow. Maybe that is why I'm so good at nursing. I am always trying to learn the next thing or throughly understand what I am learning. Don't get me wrong, it's not always a piece of cake, but I do what ever I have to do to make it though. So are you ready for your math class? You said it starts in January right? Well, I wish you luck. Try as much as you can to do the math on pencil and paper and not by calculator becuase I've heard that on the NCLEX-PN, they don't allow you to use a calc, which would make sense. But it's kinda scary though. I also start learning my basic math in my Nursing class. Well, if I have any questions I'll b sure to PM or post here. Take care and I'll ttyl. Keep me posted. ok? :):):):nurse:

Thanks so much!!! I will definitle use pencil and paper to do my math classes plus even thought it is online my insttructors will definitley want me to show the work and if I try to use just a calculator they will know it, I want to know how to do the math by hand plus as you said the NCLEX-PN will not let you use one and ifI become to dependent on one I will not pass the NCLEX-PN test. I start January 20th-basic math and a Human administrator class and then after those two classes it's Alegebra 1A and another Human administrator class and after those two classes it's Alegebra 1B and another Human admministrator class, so it's three straight months of math:banghead::stdy:!!! I am so nervous and stressed!!! I have seen what I am going to be learning and I am freaking out I have not had a math class in over 10 years!!! Hey you should check out the new smilies they have here, you hit the smilie on the message box and they have a whole bunch of new ones and they are so cute!!! Keep me posted ok:an!::[anb]::onbch: Can't wait till May!!!

wel, Missy I wish you good luck in your three math classes. you are freaking out over three months of math; try taking it for three yrs! I know that in college, as opposed to high school, things go very fast and you're learning everything in a matter of 4 months than a yr. Don't be soo stressed out about the math. The more you worry about it the stressful you will become. Just take it one day at a time and if you don't understand something, ask your instructor, your husband (is he good at math?),and u can always ask me. I may not be good, but I'm sure that I'll remember some of the math since I'm still in high school. and it's basic math and algebra 1 A and algebra 1B you're taking. Well's that is the easiest of math I would say. I understand that it will be scary but this is something you've go to do. If not your yourself, then for your pts that you will soon be taking care of. speaking of math, I'll be face to face with it on Tuesday becuase this weekend is the end of my winter break and I go back to school. Well, Missy I have to go now. Do take care and I'll ttyl. :):):yeah::lol_hitti:cheers: your right these simlies r fun.... keep me posted.
