Hi, I am 26 yrs old and a nursing student. When I was 18, while returning the books to my previous high school, I was arrested for trespassing on school ground :angryfire . I just pleaded guilty to the judge because I did not want the hasle of going back and forth to the court :uhoh21: . My probation was one year to not to enter that school (until now i still have those books) which I satisfied by the way. My question now is, will this effect me once I try to become a RN?
Did any of you had the same situation? and What did you guys do about it.

Hi Willy- I had some challenging past issues when I applied to nursing school, one of them being a misdemeanor. I was terrified to disclose this info, BUT, I have had only positive experiences. Simply write a letter of explanation(save it on your PC because you will have to write it when applying to the BON for your license, present it while job-seeking, etc.) write the facts, what you learned from it, and keep it brief and to the point. Nursing is a human profession, and none of us are white as snow :) ALSO, take care of that wreckage! Apply to the court to have your record expunged. There is a charge, but having that off of your record will save you the anxiety of having to disclose it. Best of luck to you.....

What a dumb thing to arrest someone for. Is it that you had been expelled or had you simply left? I am trying to figure out why they would arrest you for this.
they arrested me because i had an argument with the school quarterback. I wasn't expelled I simply move to another school.
Thank God, I just called the BON here in Ca and they say that it will not affect me in any how since it's only a misdemeanor

FELONIES and got accepted into nursing school. She also got liscenced by the state as a CNA. These felonies are less than 6 years old and are drug related. It amazes me but apparently getting liscenced as a CNA was her only hurdle...she can now be liscenced as an RN. I still find it hard to believe, and no she didn't lie. :stone

maybe, it all depends what kind of felonies they are. If he or she is not a criminal, I guess it's still okay. They have a list that's available for what kind of conviction will not be considered to be given a license.

You'll need to talk to an attorney, but you might be able to have your record expunged, meaning wiped clean. I have had nursing students ask me to write letters to the Board of Nursing to testify to their competence. They did not lie on their applications, and if they've satisfied their grad requirements and qualify to take the state boards, they can usually be licensed. But in California, if you've had a clean record for a number of years, you can petition the court to expunge your record. Good Luck! :)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong ... but certification as a CNA is not the same process as applying for licensure as an RN. Just curious ... what state is this in? Multiple drug-related felonies less than 10 years ago wouldn't fly in some places.
School-related background checks can be different than those for licensure and/or employment. Your friend will likely have to explain him/herself every time he/she applies for employment.

Really, it depends on a lot of things.
I've found that most employers could not give 2 skeets about misdemeanors (even drug possession). Most employers will only ask if you've been convicted of any felonies and ignore misdemeanors altogether.
If they do care about misdemeanors, the absolute worst thing you can do is lie about it. How would you feel if you were interviewing someone and you knew through background checks that this person had committed a misdemeanor, and they lied to your face about it? Not very trust-inspiring, is it?
