By the end of this year, I will hopefully be able to apply to Pima Community College's nursing program. As I understand, there's a 2 year waiting list however.
When I met with the advisor she suggested that I try University of Arizona, ASU, and NAU's nursing programs. The problem is, my OVERALL gpa isn't too stellar. When I first started out, I took a whole bunch of classes that I didn't end up doing too well in and I dropped a few classes as well.
Now, I heard NAU doesn't really care about your overall gpa, but rather they care about the prerequisite gpa. I am confident to say that my pre-requisite gpa is pretty good. I have maintained so far a B average in all of the classes that pertains to NAU's program.
I would like to know however if what they say holds any truth? Has anyone out there ever been denied because of their OVERALL gpa? I believe my pre-requisite gpa as of now is at 3.23 (which isn't impressive really) while my overall GPA is 2.50
How many of you think I should try and apply at U of A, and what do you think my chances of getting into NAU or ASU is?

From what I gather at ASU you really have to have an A average for your pre-reqs and almost perfect NET scores. Not sure about the other universities. I also know that at ASU they give different GPA values for pluses and minuses and that may work for or against you. It's really rather confusing.
If cost isn't a factor, maybe try one of the private universities. They may not have the strict GPA standards that the state schools have. It will most likely triple your cost of tuition, but there are good ones out there with shorter wait lists than the community college route. Other options would include diploma schools and LPN fasttrack programs. There may be GPA requirements for diploma schools, but there are no prerequisites for the LPN programs and the wait to go on to an RN program block 3 is not as long as the waitlist for block 1. Explore all your options before you get discouraged. :)
Good luck!

Definitely check all your options. I think what I mostly see in AZ schools is that they check your pre-req GPA. I am going to an info session for the CTD LPN program, and then I'm going to look into third block admissions or Univ of Phx's LPN to BSN (this route is a bonus for me as a military spouse because tuition is cheaper than U of A).
The thing that is a bummer about the CTD LPN program is it's about $4k more than the LPN programs in Phoenix. Doesn't make any sense!
I hear from some people that they were not at all thrilled with the NAU Tucson-Nursing campus. They didn't return phone calls, emails, etc etc and it seemed like a "cheap" program. Again, this is second hand information.
U of A also has info sessions for nursing; I believe the next one is July 22nd. Go to one, ask questions, or call an advisor. Other than having someone on here in those programs, that is probably your best bet.

Yes, I was thinking of applying for ASU, but didn't want to pay $15k, when I can do it $3500 and the advisor told me the average GPA for those entering was 3.85 and that was for all of your science classes-CHM, BIO, micro, statistics, etc. You can apply after Bio201, so use the 2 yrs to take 202, 205, and all your other co-requsities. I applied 1.5 yrs ago and I can't believe its been that long. It goes by fast!

It can't hurt to apply everywhere. I don't think, however, that you have a chance at ASU with those grades. They pretty consistently have enough applicants to only take those with almost straight As. Sorry...not being mean, just being realistic.
I have no idea about UofA. And as far as NAU is concerned...I don't think that you would be one of their first picks because they too would prefer a higher GPA, (they really would prefer As in the sciences at least) but some years they have so few applicants that they do end up pulling a lot of alternates into the program.
One of the problems that they have with their rural location is that the number of applicants each year varies so much so you really can't tell who's gonna get in. So anyway, I say go for it! Applying to all the places you can never hurt and only opens up doors you didn't know existed, IMHO. Good luck!

I can tell you that the U of A is every bit as competitive as ASU. I wanted to try to get into the program there, but my grades from 20 years ago will still be held against me. (UGH...even though I have to retake EVERYTHING because it's so old.) It doesn't hurt to try though.
As for the NAU Tucson program- I have no idea. I tried for three months to talk to someone there and, as already mentioned, no one ever bothered to call back.

I am in ASU's program right now, and ASU is pretty competitive. How ASU scores it is that they take your 17 pre-req classes and you get to pick 13 of them to go for your "Select GPA." The only catch is that you have to have 3 of the 4 sciences included in that "Select GPA." I had got a C in my math class that I took like 4 years ago my first ever semester in college and a B in my Chemistry class. However, I was able to apply with a 4.0 because I got A's in every single other class and was able to not have those two classes count for my "Select GPA."
I hope that helps!
Also, similar to what someone else mentioned, UofA is actually MORE competitive than ASU and also requires 2 semesters of a foreign language (whereas ASU and NAU do not). UofA's nursing school is ranked in the top 10 in the nation by many different scholarly journals! So yeah, UofA is pretty strict about their acceptance policies. I don't know much about the NAU program other than the fact you have to take the HESI-A2 to get in (versus the TEAS for ASU) and that you can be required to drive all the way to Kingman, Page and Prescott for clincals since Flagstaff only has 2 hospitals. But that's about it for my extent of knowledge on the other schools.
Good luck! :) The CC's have really great programs, so APPLY NOW!!! They are much more lenient than the universities are with GPA's. Also check out some of the private schools like Chamberlain or Kaplan if money isn't too much of an issue.
