I have no idea what to do

Published

I graduated in May from nursing school. I took loans out to go through because everyone kept telling me it'll pay itself out once i graduate. SO I have my BSN, my state license, and surprise! no job. neither does about 30 of my classmates, i'm looking in ohter states (i'm in NJ) i'm looking everywhere, even in PR (where my family lives) and there is nothing. So now i have loan payments that start in december, and no job. ANd i've applied to non-nursing jobs to. there is nothing. Can anyone help?

Halifax Health is not a smart place to work, they actually killed my Dad earlier this year. I was speaking of travel nursing after getting one yr experience. As far as government type jobs, VA requires BSN and not everyone even with experience has that. Indian Health can provide loan forgiveness. Intercity health dept's will work with nurses. Suggestion was to look outside the box!

Have you tried getting professionally done resume and posting it online with various sources?

I live in NJ. And i've tried virginia, WV, IL, MI. they all want experienced nurses. the majority want at least 2yrs experience. there were places in california that didnt need expeerience but they want u to already have a nursing l icense when u apply. and i cant possible go around and pay for nursing l icenses and every state where i would like a job. i'll try that indian health thank you.

There are hospitals in TX, AZ, NM, UT and even FL that hire new grads and pay relocation and partial tution.

Try smaller towns in the south. We will be opening a hospital in Feb. and need nurses.

Rome, GA

Come to TEXAS. HOUSTON to be exact. We always need nurses of any licensure...problem is if you don't like your job there is 15 other ones wanting you and kinda makes it a little bad when you know that you can quit and go to where the "GRASS IS GREENER" if ya know what I mean! I don't, but I know alot of nurses that do!

Try the military and the US Public Health Service. Also look into facilities that provide medical day care to disabled children. They often hire new grads at fairly low wages, but will give you the experience that you need.

Specializes in Med-Surg, moderate sedation.

ONe of my classmates is joining; he said they are paying a $30,000 bonus!

When you say you have looked into all those states and say they want experience, how did you do that? Those are big states with many jobs. What are you actually applying for? Have you tried teaching hospitals> I started as new grad at Johns Hopkins Hospital 22 yrs ago and yes they hire new grads. Not alot but they do.

I want to help you, just need to know exactly what you have applied for and what you are expecting/wanting.

Pick up a Nursing 2010 current magazine and actually apply to all the hospitals offering jobs. Also many states allow "walk-thru licenses" which means you can get it in same day, so each state requires license but California you can get it in one day! So you do not pay till you get job offer and then get there.

Is NJ a multi state compact license state?

If you are willing to go where the work is...I do not understand why you can not find a job? I believe you just think you may not be getting accurate info.

I should have mentioned jails, prisons and juvenile delinquent facilities. These can be safe and rewarding places to work with government benefit packages. Since they are not the first choice for your competitors, you may have a leg up on getting hired.

Specializes in Primary Care.

You can ask for a deferment but look in to traveling nursing. Sometimes hospitals will hire travelers for 13 weeks assignments. Sometimes nurses will get offers for jobs if the nurse manager like their work. Also look at the NHSC( National Health Service Corporation). These jobs are in areas where nurses are needed and they repay your student loans. Best of luck to you I know it is very difficult

I agree! Often times the reason it's hard to find a job is because you are listening to the negative advice from others and not trying or you are approaching it the wrong way. I know several new grads that have gotten job offers straight out of school and others that have gotten them within a few months. Networking plays a big role in finding a job as well. Sometimes as a new grad, its not what you know but who. So try networking. There are tons of ways to network and meet new people. One of my best girlfriends actually went thru linkedin and emailed a friend of a friend who was in that field. She got the right info and got a job within that same company simply by asking. Start talking to people! You will be AMAZED at who you can meet and where it can take you.

If you are willing to do whatever, you should have no problem finding a job. Don't let the economy discourage you! Ive seen it used as as excuse... And Ive seen others not even affected when it comes to finding new employment. Double check the way you present yourself, the way you interview, and go personally and find the hiring people. It might take a few tries, but persistance always pays off.
